  1. The Mughal Empire • Through the use of superior weaponry the Mughals were able to take a foothold in northern India from which they conquered much of the Indian sub-continent • By the use of heavy artillery and diplomatic strategy (such as arranged marriages) the Mughal Empire became the greatest to rule over India in thousands of years. SOL The location of the Mughal Empire was Northern India. SOL The Mughal Empire spread Islam throughout India.

Babur • The first leader of the Mughals Babur was related to the great Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan. • With a small force of soldiers armed with advanced weapons Babur carved out the heart of the Mughal Empire in Northern India. • He captured the city of Delhi with 12,000 men against a force ten times his.

Akbar • Akbar was Babur’s grandson and the greatest Mughal Emperor on the battle field. • Like his grandfather Akbar used superior military technology to gain territory for his empire. • He is not only known for his great victories on the field of battle but also for his religious tolerance toward other faiths which helped to strengthen the empire. • Akbar reigned over an era of prosperity and progress in the Mughal Empire.

Aurangzeb • One of the most controversial figures in Mughal history, Aurangzeb took the Mughal throne after killing his brother and imprisoning his father. • As a dedicated Muslim he sought to end drinking, gambling, and the custom of suttee (the cremation of a widow on her husbands funeral pyre). • Aurangzeb also forbade the building of Hindu temples and forced Hindu followers to convert to Islam. • His policies along with the slow decline of the empire divided the Mughals and created much civil unrest including revolts.

Mughal Architecture; Safdarjung's Tomb Elevated Dome • Mughal architecture is know for its beauty and majesty the world over. • The style blends aspects of Islamic, Persian, and Indian constructions to form its own unique design. • Some aspects of Mughal architecture include: overhanging balconies, elevated domes, elaborate lattice screens, overhanging eaves, and detailed symmetry.

SOL Taj Mahal A leader of the Mughal Empire built the TajMahal • The Taj Mahal is a tomb built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for one of his deceased wives. • It is widely regarded as the best example of Mughal Architecture. • The tomb is considered a world wonder and draws thousands of tourists each year. • The structure includes a central tomb outlined by four minarets surrounded by an elaborate garden
