6. Create a Calendar of Events • August • Hold an interactive “Advocacy” presentation during your school’s new student orientation. • This activity encourages incoming student pharmacists to find their voice! • See the next few slides for details on how to implement this event.

Create a Calendar of Events • August: Incorporate Advocacy into Orientation • Introduce topics of concern in the pharmacy world that first-year student pharmacists would have an opinion on, e.g.: • Prerequisite coursework for pharmacy school • Accreditation standards for pharmacy schools • Another topic in pharmacy education • Prescriptive authority for pharmacists

8. Create a Calendar of Events • August: Incorporate Advocacy into Orientation • Have the students participate in small-group roundtable discussions, and then share the results from each table with the class at large.

9. Create a Calendar of Events • September • Preparation, preparation, preparation! • American Pharmacists Month (APhM) AND APhA-ASP Midyear Regional Meeting (MRM) • Download the APhM Planning Guide • Give a “Policy 101” presentation at a chapter meeting • Hold a resolution brainstorm session

Create a Calendar of Events • October • American Pharmacists Month is your time to shine! • Who is your target audience? • Patients, lawmakers, other health care professionals, and practicing pharmacists • Submit resolutions to your Regional Delegate at least two weeks prior to MRM • Stand up for the issues you are passionate about during the MRM Policy Proposal Forum

15. National Legislative Issues • What is happening on the National level? • Go to www.pharmacist.com, click on the Get Involved, then under “Advocate,” click “Action.” • Use this page to learn about and take action on key legislative issues

YOU Can Make a Difference • Conduct letter writing campaigns • Hold your chapter members accountable to call their legislators on issues your chapter is supporting • ONE letter or ONE phone call can make a difference in how a Legislator votes on an issue. YOUR letter or phone call can be the deciding vote. MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Implications of “1 Chapter, 1 Resolution” • Start the policy writing process for your chapter earlier in the year • Hold a mock HOD for different resolutions thought of among your chapter • Have at least one alternate resolution in the case that your original thought is duplicated. Your regional delegate will be in touch if this is the case

Chapter Spotlight • This month, we are spotlighting: SLI Attendees! • At SLI in July, seventy-eight student leaders met with a total of 68 legislators’ offices! • Michael Spira, APhA Senior Lobbyist, gave the participants documents about the MTM Benefits Act (H.R. 891) and the MTM Empowerment Act (S. 274) and led a preparatory briefing. • Thank you to all who participated!
