Using Water to Suit Our Needs • People have diverted water from streams, lakes and other bodies of water to help their living in farms, cities and also their homes.
Damages to the Environment • Loss of plant life • Wipes out populations of fish and invertebrates • Devastates fisheries
Affects of Insufficient Irrigation • Dying crops • Farmer’s pay • Only about 45% of water used in irrigation is taken up by crops • Overirrigation affects 1/5 of the world’s farmland
DepletingGroundwater • Groundwater is depleted more easily compared to surface water • Aquifers recharge very slowly • If compared to a bank we are making more withdrawals then payments • Becomes more expensive as the amount lessens and eventually will run out • Sinkholes are caused by where groundwater gave way
