How to use these slides... • This is just a starting point for your first volunteer meeting – you should add and alter these slides as much as you want to make it perfect for your project. • There are a few helpful notes at the bottom of each slide so take a look! • Depending on your volunteer group, you may need to explain more or less about the Students’ Union, Volunteer Northumbria and the rights and responsibilities of volunteers – but don’t assume everyone will know as much as you! • You must cover Health and Safety, as this is different in each project and it’s always better to be safe than sorry! • Try to get your volunteers talking during the session so they feelmore involved – you can do this through adding a few activitiesand games to your slides. Psst! Rememberto delete thisslide whenyou’re done!

  4. WHAT IS VOLUNTEER NORTHUMBRIA?

What is Northumbria Students’ Union? • Volunteer Northumbria is part of something much bigger – Northumbria Students’ Union. • The Students’ Union is ran by studentsfor students! • It’s got just one aim – to have apositive impact on the lives of allNorthumbria students. • Can you name all six of theStudents’ Union’skey values?

  6. What is Northumbria Students’ Union? Democratic All key decisions will have the input of NSU’s members and staff and will be open to scrutiny. All elections will be conducted fairly. Inclusive NSU will take positive action to try and make all its activities, services and opportunities for involvement open to all its members. Ethical NSU will conduct its affairs and make decisions based on the principles of recognised sound ethical practice for membership based “not for profit” organisations.

  7. What is Northumbria Students’ Union? Innovation NSU will strive to be creative in all its work and will always seek out new and innovative ways of delivering services, activities and opportunities for members and customers. QualityProviding a quality experience will underpin all NSU’s planning and be its principal focus when interacting with its members and customers Partnership Elected Officers, Students’ Union Departments and staff will work together as a unified team at all times. NSU will develop partnership working with University Departments and other external companies and organisation where this will benefit its members and customers.

What is Volunteer Northumbria? • Volunteer Northumbria is our community-based volunteering program! • Volunteers create and lead projects to help the community, often working in partnership with and supporting another organisation. • Previously VN volunteers have been involved in running a huge variety of projects and events from speed dating for people with a learning disability to drama lessons for looked after children.   • Last year, 650 Northumbria students volunteered for over 40 different events and projects with 45 local, national and international organisations and charities, supporting over 1000 members of the local community, and winning regional and national awards!

  9. What is Volunteer Northumbria? Action Student-led All our decisions are made by students, from the VN committee who manages the whole program, to Project Leaders who control individual projects! We’re all about actually doingsomething to create a benefit. This means that we don’t fundraise for other organisations (that’s RAG!). Community Our projects are designed to benefit the community and not just other students, so we’re very Newcastle-focused.

  12. What does a volunteer do? As a Community Volunteer, you should: • Stay within the limits of the project. • Attend any appropriate meetings or training for the project. • Take responsibility for your role within the team by regularly communicating with the Project Leader. • Take responsibility for agreed specific aspects of the project. • Support other Community Volunteers to achieve a successful outcome for the project.

What you can expect from volunteering • A supportive and positive environment that ensures you enjoy your volunteering • To have a choice of volunteering opportunities and a clear description of the nature of these opportunities • Opportunities to get involved in the planning and delivery of volunteer opportunities offered by the Union. • To be treated with respect and courtesy • To be treatedfairly regardless of your background • An induction and opportunities to undertake appropriate training • A named contact for support • Relevant and up-to-date information and advice • Recognition and thanks • Reimbursement of any reasonable out-of-pocket expenses incurred in volunteering • Advice and help if you have any questions and concerns regarding your volunteering experience.

What NSU expect from volunteers • Support Northumbria Students’ Union’s aims, objectives and principles • Be reliable, punctual and committed • If you can’t attend your volunteering session, let the Project Leader know so that other arrangements can be made • Never put yourself, another volunteer or a member of the public at risk • Maintain professional boundaries - respect confidentiality and do not disclose any personal information • Follow your project’s policies and procedures • Only carry out tasks that you are able to; say no if necessary! • If you are dissatisfied or are considering leaving a project, please let us know! • Treat fellow volunteers and staff with courtesy and respect • Let us know if you wish to change the nature of your contribution • Let us know if we can improve the service and support that you receive

A quick spot of Health and Safety! • Spills in the Student Union - if someone spills something, either wipe it up if small or if major spill, ask someone to call facilities • Stairs in the building – please don’t run up and down, in case you trip! • Boxes of equipment – keep all boxes on the shelves tidily, and don’t leave anything on the floor
