Welcome and Introductions Two Truths and a Lie On your index card please write three statements: Two truths and a Lie
What exactly is a protocol? “A protocol consists of agreed upon guidelines for a conversation.” • Assists in building the skills and culture for collaborative work • Makes it safe to ask challenging questions • License to listen without having to continuously respond • Efficient use of time
Why do we revisit the protocols in the Literacy Workgroup? Why now?
7 Norms of Collaboration • Pausing • Paraphrasing • Putting inquiry at the center • Probing for Specificity • Placing ideas on the table • Paying attention to self and others • Positive Presuppositions
What do they mean? How do they relate to our work on the Literacy Workgroup?
Seek to understand not to be understood • Listen without judging • Accept the differences in people • Avoid “you should have” • Avoid unsolicited advice • Do not talk about your own experiences • Avoid stereotypes • Stay focused on the evidence
Norms curtail unproductive behavior, give permission to be bold, and remind us that people learn in different ways.
The problem with communication ..... is the illusion that it has been accomplished. George Bernard Shaw
Ways of Talking Dialogue vs. Discussion Tell me what you pay attention to and I will tell you who you are. José Ortega y Gasset
