LCT2 Background & Objectives • Utilize space based communications assets for over the horizon range tracking activities • Lower launch costs by minimizing down range tracking assets • Provide increased range availability • Enable remote/austere launch operations • NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) provides S-, Ku-, and Ka-Band space based data communications • TDRSS has been historically used by government satellites and high altitude balloons • Presently TDRSS communication flight hardware is very costly • LCT2 is an effort to make TDRSS communications flight hardware more economical and less intrusive for flight vehicles with low weight and power margins Wallops Flight Facility - Code 569

Current Program Task • Design a TDRSS transceiver that can be transferred to industry to enable future range operations cost savings and enable rapid response range operations. • The goals are: • Develop a transceiver design compatible with the TDRSS S-Band forward link and DG1 mode 2, DG2 return link formats • Develop prototype units for demonstration on sub-orbital platforms, including sounding rockets, long duration balloons, and UAV’s • Develop low cost solution for technology transfer to industry for future commercial production • Lower cost from $250K per Transceiver seen today to $75K per Transceiver Wallops Flight Facility - Code 569
