Expectations • You will have six weeks to read a book of your choice • Most of your reading will be done outside of class • If you finish your assignments early in class, you will be expected to read your selected book silently • As you read, you will keep a reading log and a word sheet • You will write a one page book review
Book selection • You choose the book • I approve it • You read it • Please bring it to class every day in case you finish early so that you can read silently • If you forget your book, you’ll have to read one of mine
Reading log • Keep track of: • Book • Author • Date • Pages read • Summary of what you read on those pages
Word sheet • As you read: • Jot down words you come across that you don’t know • The page numbers they are on • What you think it means using context clues • The dictionary definition • The book title • The author
Book review • One page • Paragraph 1: summary • Paragraph 2: critique • Paragraph 3: conclusion
Summary • Discuss major themes, ideas and characters • Provide two excerpts from the book • Summarize ideas from the book using your own words
quotes • At least two direct quotes, or excerpts from the book • Should be noted in the review with parenthetical citations • Exp: (48)
critique • Thoughts, responses, and reactions to: • The book’s themes • The author’s intent • The subject matter • How well it is written • Overall success and failures
conclusion • Summarizes your summary of the book AND your critique of it.
Organization • Flows well • Easy to read • Smooth transitions from paragraph to paragraph • Paragraphs in correct order (summary, critique, conclusion)
Mechanics, spelling, and format • Variety of sentence structures • 0-5 grammatical errors • 0-5 spelling errors • Paragraphs separated and indented
Book reviews • Select and read book • Keep with you for silent reading if you finish class work early • Maintain reading log and word sheet as you read the book • One page written review that meets the given guidelines • Edit and revise/peer edit/writing conference • 3 minute oral book review to class • Post conclusion of your review to HHS library’s card catalog under the book listing
