Integrated Algebra 2 Section 4.7 Solving Exponential and Logarithmic Equations NOTE: Be sure to check your answers on these problems. It is very possible to get an answer that does not work when substituted back into the original problem!
Solving Exponential Equations • METHOD #1: Try to re-write both sides of the equation in terms of the same base: • 3 x = 27 • (3/4) x = (27/64)
Solving Exponential Equations • METHOD #1a: Try to re-write both sides of the equation in terms of the same, smaller base (you can only change large numbers into small numbers!):
Solving Exponential Equations • METHOD #2: If there is no common base, change the equation to logarithm form (use the change-of-base formula for an estimated answer if needed)
Solving Logarithmic Equations METHOD #1: If a logarithm is equal to a number, change it into exponential form ans solve for x. • lnx = -1 • log 4 x = 3 • log x – 2 = 0
Solving Logarithmic Equations METHOD #2: If a logarithm is equal to a logarithm of the same base, you can eliminate the logs and solve.
Solving Logarithmic Equations METHOD #3: Use logarithm properties to combine logarithms before solving.
