  1. Bullying: Everyone’s Problem By Dawne Gibson School Counselor at Englewood Elementary School 2011

  2. What is bullying? Bullying includes direct and indirect acts of intimidation and humiliation towards someone.

  3. Direct Bullying? This includes physical acts such as hitting or shoving, verbal threats, name calling, demanding things or services, etc…

  4. Indirect Bullying? This includes rejection, humiliation, manipulation, emails, written notes, blackmailing, etc…

  5. Who Bullies? Boys and girls alike can be bullies. Boys tend to use physical acts of bullying, while girls tend to use exclusion tactics and rumors.

  6. What are our schools doing about bullying? Schools have Zero-Tolerance policies to combat bullying. Counselors also provide guidance lessons that teach conflict-resolution and problem-solving techniques. Teachers create positive atmospheres to discourage bullying.

  7. What can parents do? Create open lines of communication so your child will be able to talk with you when situations arise. Model appropriate behaviors for handling anger and conflicts. Avoid programs and games that encourage violent behaviors.

  8. Conflicts are inevitable, but bullying should not be a normal occurrence in our schools. With conflict-resolution skills and zero-tolerance policies, bullying can be combated.

  9. Bullies will discover beneficial ways of solving their problems. The victims will be empowered and won’t feel hopeless. Open lines of communication will be established between parents and their children.
