Enhance Reading Skills: Visualizing Characters and Settings for Better Understanding
Good readers visualize as they read, creating mental images of characters, events, and settings. This technique enhances comprehension and engagement, just as one visualizes destinations before a trip, like Australia. From little penguins at Phillip Island to the scenic Great Ocean Road, descriptions come to life when we imagine them vividly. In practice, readers can explore their visualizations through prompts from engaging texts like "Red Kayak." By bringing stories to life, readers deepen their connections and understanding. Let’s visualize together!

Reading Strategy Visualizing Characters and Setting
Good readers VISUALIZE • They imagine characters, events, and settings to help them understand what’s happening. • They pay attention to the images that form in their minds as they read.
This reminds me of my trip to Australia this past summer. I had to visualize what I would see on my tours by reading the descriptions. • “Get up close to Australia's famous wildlife on a day trip to Phillip Island. You'll see the little penguins, koalas, wallabies, kangaroos and seals on this full day tour from Melbourne.” • “Take a Great Ocean Road day trip and experience one of the world's great coastal drives.”
Where the Wild Things Are • "That very night in Max's room a forest grew and grew and grew until his ceiling hung with vines and the walls became the world all around."
Let’s Practice!!!! • As I read an excerpt from Chapter Four from the very awesome book “Red Kayak”, I want you to visualize what is happening in this very suspenseful scene? • Can you visualize the setting? • Can you feel what the character is feeling? Listen carefully…..
Etch and Sketch Draw and writeyour thoughts about what you are seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling.
