Collaborative Line Equation Challenge: Point-Slope vs. Slope-Intercept Forms

In this engaging math challenge, students take turns as captains to tackle equations of lines using point-slope and slope-intercept forms. Each captain presents a unique problem, and the team collaborates to determine the correct form to use. Participants first write their proposed equations, then compare their answers. The session concludes with a group discussion to reinforce learning and clarify any misconceptions. Ideal for reinforcing the understanding of linear equations and enhancing teamwork skills.

  1. Showdown Directions • You will take turns being captains. • Captain puts up the first problem. • Everyone writes down what form they should use.( including captain). Team discusses and decides on form. Click enter once to show form. • Everyone works the problem individually. When you finish close your iPad. • Once all iPads are closed, captains shows answer(click enter). • Group discusses correct answer and helps any member that did not get it right.

  2. Point-Slope What Form Should We Use? Write an equation of the line that passes through the point (2, 2) and has a slope of 4.

  3. Slope-Intercept What Form Should We Use? • Write an equation of the line with a slope of -2 and a y-intercept of 8. y = -2x + 8

  4. Point-Slope What Form Should We Use? Write an equation of the line that passes through (7, 2) and (2, 12). or

  5. Slope-Intercept What Form Should We Use? y = -2x + 4

  6. Point-Slope What Form Should We Use? Write an equation of the line that passes through (2,6) with a slope of 4.
