  2. Able Requirement 12 • Know and put into practice the rules for fire prevention. Conduct a fire safety inspection of the craft normally used by your ship or of your ship's meeting place. • Note any fire hazards and report them to your ship's petty officers. • Know the different kinds of fire extinguishing agents and how each works. • Know the classes of fires and the type of fire extinguisher that may or may not be used for each. • In a safe place under adult supervision, demonstrate the extinguishing of class A and class B fires with an approved fire extinguisher.   3. Fire Safety • A Fire At Sea Can Ruin Your Whole Day • "Fire" is one of the most feared words in a boater's vocabulary. There is no such thing as an insignificant fire on a boat. • Generally, if the fire has not been put out within two (2) minutes, it's all over but the screaming and yelling. Types of Fires • All fires are classified according to the type of material that is burning. • Class A fires include wood, paper, cushions, canvas, fiberglass, rubber and many plastics. • Class B fires include gasoline, propane, diesel fuel, oils, grease, paints and flammable gases. • Class C fires include wiring, circuit breakers, electric motors and appliances. • Fire extinguishers are rated by their abilities to extinguish the above three classes of fires. • Their ratings reflect the type of fire they're designed to fight. • For example, most small extinguishers are rated either B-C (meaning they can put out both flammable liquids and electrical fires) or A-B-C (meaning they can put out all three types). Fire Extinguisher Requirements • Extinguishers aboard a boat must be United States Coast Guard approved and labeled as such. • Must have a a minimum classification of B-I or B-II. • Extinguishes Class B fires • B-I extinguisher carries 2.5 lbs. of dry chemical. • B-II extinguisher carries 10 lbs. of dry chemical. • Should be mounted: • in a readily accessible position, • away from the areas where a fire could likely start such as the galley or the engine compartment. Fire Extinguisher Requirements • Boats are required to carry fire extinguishers if any of the following conditions exist: • The boat has an inboard engine. • The boat has closed compartments where fuel can be stored. • The boat has a covered bilge not completely filled with foam. • The boat has closed living space. • The boat has permanently installed fuel tanks (i.e.: any fuel tank that cannot be quickly moved in the event of fire). Fire Extinguisher Requirements • The minimum number of handheld, portable extinguishers required on a boat is as follows: • Boats less than 26 feet • One (1) type B-I extinguisher • Boats 26 feet to less than 40 feet • Two (2) type B-I or one (1) type B-II • Boats 40 feet to less than 65 feet • Three (3) type B-I or one (1) type B-I + one (1) type B-II • Always have your extinguishers mounted where you can easily reach them. Fire Extinguisher Maintenance • Inspect extinguishers monthly to make sure that: • Seals and tamper indicators are not broken or missing • Pressure gauges or indicators read in the operable range • There is no obvious physical damage, rust, corrosion, leakage or clogged nozzles • Weigh extinguishers annually to assure that the minimum weight is as stated on the label • Replace or recharge extinguishers that do not satisfy the above requirements or that have been partially emptied Able Requirement 12 - Safety

  9. Using a Fire Extinguisher • If you ever need to use your extinguisher, remember to use the P.A.S.S. system to fight the fire: P - Pull the pin A - Aim at the base of the fire S - Squeeze the handle S - Sweep from side to side Able Requirement 12 - Safety
