  1. Comparing Fractions MTL Meeting September 20, 2011

  2. Today’s Forecast! We are learning to develop our understanding of fractions.

  3. Success Criteria We know we are successful when we can explain our strategies and reasoning as we compare and order fractions.

  4. Launch Which would you rather have or of a pie?

  5. Take out your Fractions Strips

  6. Unit Fractions • Fold each fraction strip so you can only see one “unit” of each strip. • Arrange these unit fractions from largest to smallest. • What conjectures/hypotheses can you make about unit fractions?

  7. Fractions Composed of Unit Fractions • Fold your fraction strip to show ¾. • How do you see this fraction in terms of unit fractions?

  8. Comparing Fractions with the Same Denominator Which fraction is larger? Use your fraction strips to model each pair of fractions. Record your conjecture about which fraction is larger when the denominators are the same on your white board. Share with your partner. What conjectures can you make about two fractions that have the same denominator?

  9. Comparing Fractions with the Same Numerator Which fraction is larger? Use your fraction strips to model each pair of fractions. Record your conjecture about which fraction is larger when the numerators are the same on your white board. Share with your partner. What conjectures can you make about two fractions that have the same denominator?

  10. In Summary We know we are successful when we can explain our strategies and reasoning as we compare and order fractions.

  11. Comparing and Ordering Fractions • 1/4, 1/2, 1/9, 1/5, 1/100 • 3/15, 3/9, 3/4, 3/5, 3/12 • 5/12, 3/12, 1/12, 8/12, 7/12

  12. Apply Sharonda and Dennis each have a garden. The gardens are the same size. 5/6 of Dennis’ garden is planted with corn. 7/8 of Sharonda’s garden is planted with corn. Who has planted more corn in their garden? • Use fraction strips and reasoning to explain your answer to this question.
