Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics in Ireland • Administrative Crime data • Police (Garda Siochana) • Summary recorded crime published quarterly • Detailed Annual Report • Recent Classification Changes • “headline” and “non-headline” offences • Since 1999, events recorded on police IT system - prior to that, paper returns

  2. Victimisation Surveys • Module included in QNHS (large-scale household surveys, essentially LFS • Due to be repeated in 2006 • Plan is for large-scale dedicated crime and victimisation surveys every 2 years from 2008

  3. Courts and Prisons Services • Crimes detected and prosecuted included in Police Annual Report • Very basic summary information provided publicly by Courts Service • Basic stocks and flows information provided by prisons service

  4. Future Plans • Expert Group on Crime Statistics reported in 2004 • Following report, decision taken to centralise crime and criminal justice statistics by setting up unit in CSO • Discussions with police at an advanced stage regarding access to micro-data • CSO to take full responsibility from 2006
