NEH proposal : The Highlands of Papua New Guinea and 20th Century Anthropology • UCSD Libraries resubmit to National Endowment of the Humanities Access & Preservation Grant for $ 350,000 • NEH grant awardees announced May 2010 • Seek to build accessible online repository • Document the History of anthropology & social history of Papua New Guinea • Roy Rappaport Papers (1926-1997) • Maring people and human ecology, ritual, and acculturation • Edwin Cook Papers (1932-1984) • Manga (Narak-language) people’s transition into the modern world • If funded, the project will digitize over 16,400 items • Photographs • Anthropology Field notes • Dissertations

UCSD Libraries Preservation Funds:Sylvester Lambert Papers (1920 – 1942) • Sylvester Lambert Papers (1920 – 1942) • The collection documents Dr. Lambert’s public health work conducted in the Pacific Islands for the Rockefeller Foundation and is comprised of reports, writings, negatives, photographs, and lantern slides. Dr. Lambert’s book Yankee Doctor in Paradise published in 1941 documents his experiences in Australia, Fiji, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands. • 1,389 nitrate negatives, glass plate negatives, lantern slides

ODiL PRDLA grant/ UCSD Libraries: Keesing / Scheffler Collections • Roger Keesing Papers, 1962 - 1993 • Cultural and linguistic anthropologist and his papers document the research and material generated from his interest in the Solomon Islands, primarily in the culture, history and language of the Kwaio people. • 2,878 black and white 35mm negatives & color slides • Harold Scheffler Papers, 1926 -1981 • Scheffler’s papers document his ethnographic research in the Solomon Islands , specifically his dissertation fieldwork on Choiseul Island and his comparative study of religious revitalization movements and separatist churches on Rendova Island. • 1,370 black and white 35mm negatives & color slides
