  2. REAR SEATBELT LAW IN MALAYSIA • Enforced on 1st January 2009 2

  3. BACKGROUND • A survey showed that 90% of vehicles on the road are equipped with rear seat belts • Only 5% to 9% of the time there are more than 3 persons at the rear of passenger cars • No summons but advocacy for extra passengers in the rear

  14. PROTON Service Centre All car dealers in Malaysia are participating in this promotional campaign since August 2009

  15. Examples of car park operators, hotels, hypermarkets, etc. promoting the usage of rear seatbelts by putting reminders on the boom gate.

  16. PENALTY • For passengers below 18 years responsibility for ‘Buckle Up’ is on the driver; • The penalty for not wearing seatbelts is a RM 300.00

  17. EXEMPTIONS ON REAR SEATBELTS • Vehicles registered before 1st January 1995; • Vehicles registered after 1st January 1995 but without anchorage points; • Commercial vehicles i.e. lorries, buses and passenger vehicles with more than 7 passengers;

  18. RETROFITTING OF SEATBELTS • Vehicles registered after 1st Jan 1995 which do not have rear seat belts are given 3 years to have them installed. • Only authorized dealers and service centres allowed to retrofit seat belts; • Vehicles SHOULD NOT install seat belts at accessories shops; • Vehicles without anchorage points are exempted from the rear seat belt ruling and are advised against installing the rear seat belts;
