  5. Steps: Making the Base • Put a piece of masking tape on the end of your core. Write your name on it. • Make the base of the basket. • Left hand = holds • Right hand = wraps • Hold the core and 5 inches of the yarn in your left hand • Wrap the end of the core • Fold the wrapped core into ½ (makes an oval shape) • Wrap over the end of the oval shape Vocabulary Basketry = basket weaving Core

Steps: Making the Bottom • Start to make wefts (stitches) for the base of the basket • When you want to raise the sides of the basket, hold the core on top of the previous row while stitching Vocabulary COIL = core wound and tied in a circle shape COILING = weaving technique using an inner core that is wrapped with a smaller thread WEFT = in coiled basketry, the stitches

  7. Steps: Finishing the Basket Weft the rows for the sides of your basket Add embellishments when wanted EMBELLISHMENT: any decorative treatment done to the handle or body of a basket. Nonessential to the construction of the basket. Embellishments may include beads, dried flowers, feathers, leather, etc.
