  3. When did it start changing… Southeastern Utah first began modifying ceremonial baskets by adding figures and other images In the 1970s, traders encouraged native weavers to produce baskets that would appeal to buyers beyond the local Navajo market.

  4. New additions.. incorporating sacred images and designs inspired by the prayers and rituals of medicine men into her work. depicting traditional stories or ceremonies.

  5. Contemporary Baskets • Abstarct: Artwork which takes liberties, altering for instance color and form in ways that are conspicuous, can be said to be partially abstract. Total abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable.

  6. Illusionary: Intricate geometric patterns function like the “eye-dazzler” designs.

  7. Collage: creatively bring together multiple, sometimes unexpected, images to make a more personal interpretation of some aspect of Navajo belief or culture.

Your Assignment • You will pick a story, only 5 people to a story. • You will then write down any main points to help you remember the story and then grab a piece of paper from the back table. • You will then re create the story by doing it in one of the 3 contemporary ways • Abstract, Illusion, and Collage THIS IS HOMEWORK!!
