Enhancing Aviation Weather Training for Effective Decision Making
This document outlines the importance of aviation weather training as a crucial element for effective operational decision-making. It covers the complexities and costs associated with training controllers, dispatchers, and pilots, often leading to underfunding. The Aviation Weather Division is initiating a service analysis to assess current training levels and identify high-level training needs within the NextGen framework, aimed at leveraging automated decision support tools to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Continuous assessment and training development will be supported by NWS.

Weather Training Is: • Critical to effective operational decision making • Complex • Expensive, especially in terms of taking controllers, dispatchers, and pilots off position or flight deck • Often under funded, because of 2 & 3 above AND/OR • Conducive to highly intuitive Decision Support Tools to reduce training time/costs
Aviation Weather Training Activities • Aviation Weather Division in NextGen is initiating a small service analysis effort to: • Assess current level of controller training – the “as is” • Identify high level training needs in a NextGen context of automated/semiautomated Decision Support Tools -- the “to be” state. • Assess the gap • ATO components continue to assess, develop and conduct near-term operational training • NWS continues to provides important weather training support to FAA
