Introduction to probability
What is probability? The likelihood of an event Occurring
Suppose you have 4 nickels, 2 dimes, and 6 quarters in your pocket. If you draw a coin randomly from your pocket, what is the probability that: a. You will draw a nickel? b. You will draw a half-dollar? c. You will draw a quarter? d. You will draw a silver coin?
Event – “drawing a specific coin” • Sample space – All possible out comes • P(E) = Number of favorable outcomes Total Number of Outcomes Ways to express probability • Fraction • Decimal • Percent • Odds • Theoretical Probability
You will draw a nickel? • P(nickel) = • b. You will draw a half-dollar? • P(half-dollar) = • c. You will draw a quarter? • P(quarter) = • You will draw a silver coin? • P(silver coin) =
Your group’s job is to conduct an experiment to determine the following: • What is the probability of drawing each • “different” item in the bag? • Rules: • NO ONE LOOKS INSIDE!!! • ONLY 1 item can be drawn out at a time. • The Item MUST be put back in the bag before another Item is drawn. • Create a system for recording your results.
NOW…… • If I told you there are 40 chips in your bag…. • Predict how many of each are in your bag • Red Chips • Blue Chips • Green chips • Purple chips • NOW COUNT!!!
What is the difference between Theoretical probability and Experimental Probability?
Let the Good Times Roll!! Pick a Partner. Select which player will be ODD and which will be EVEN. Each turn consists of rolling 2 dice. One player rolls to find the product of the two dice. If the product is the even, then the player who predicted even gets a point. If the product is the odd, then the player who predicted odd gets a point. First player to 10 points WINS!!
