  2. Amplitude • Amplitude- Distance of a wave above and below the normal level • Amplitude of a transverse wave is about ½ the distance between the crest and trough • Related to the energy the wave carries • EX: Tsunami has large amounts of energy with a lot of amplitude

  3. Wavelength • Wavelength- (Transverse) Distance from the top of one crest to the top of the next or from trough to trough • Wavelength- (Compression) Distance from center of one compression and center of the next compression or from rarefaction to rarefaction

  4. Frequency • Frequency- Number of wave lengths that pass a given point in 1 second (Hz or Hertz) • As frequency increases, wavelength decreases

  5. Wave Speed • Formula for wave speed… • Wave speed (m/s)=frequency (Hz) X wavelength (m) • Mechanical waves travel fastest in solids and slowest in gases • Electromagnetic waves travel fastest in gases and slowest in solids Mechanical Wave
