  1. Advanced Composites for Fire Applications Performance By Design International October 17, 2006 Chris Duer Engineer II Northrop Grumman Corporation

  2. History • E34 developed testing matrix to quantify material suppliers claims of “fire proof” composites • Initial testing performed by previous employees of Northrop Grumman Newport News allowed down selection to <10 materials for full UL1709 testing • Testing was performed by V-Tech Laboratories • This white paper provides data and recommendations to continue evaluating Performance By Design International’s (PDI) proprietary fire laminate

  3. PDI Contact • Mr. David Pendergraph • 355 Wide WatersAuburn, NY 13021(315) 730-2463dpender@pbdracing.com

  4. Fire Results • Data used is for comparison purposes only • Other material suppliers names have been removed for confidentiality purposes • PDI material is referred to in data as “IDS-1”

  5. Flame Spread

  6. Smoke Obscuration

  7. Average Heat Release

  8. Irradiance Peak

  9. Ignitability Test

  10. Combustion Gases

  11. Oxygen Temperature Index

  12. UL-1709

  13. Fire Summary • PDI material performed in fire testing with properties superior to most others tested at the same time • E34 recommended to continue on with mechanical properties testing

  14. Mechanical Properties • NGNN has begun mechanical properties testing of PDI material • Existing data can not be compared to mechanical properties data on PDI material • Existing mechanical properties were taken on warps parallel panels • NGNN specified PDI to supply a quasi laminate • Based on extrapolating data to date on PDI laminate, NGNN recommends that PDI supply material and run testing on warps parallel laminate • PDI is currently in process of supplying Matrix Composites, Inc with Mode I fracture toughness panels

  15. Recommendations • NGNN recommends this material for further mechanical properties testing • Based on initial mechanical properties testing, NGNN recommends the PDI material for use as fairings, shield, enclosures, and other lightly loaded structures • NGNN also recommends that, with the incorporation of a structural space frame, the PDI laminate could be used in higher loaded applications
