  3. STUDENT LONG TERM GOALS • CAREER GOALS • IDENTIFY INTERESTS, STRENGTHS AND ABILITIES

College Criteria Ask yourself: • Why go to college? • What’s my career goal? • What interests, talents, or hobbies do I posses? • What colleges am I eligible for based on my GPA, course selection, and test scores? • Other considerations-academic competition, athletics, special programs, religious affiliation…. Campus Visits • Read the college catalog & view book prior to visit. • Ask questions about: where students study, computer access/availability, weekend life, types of sports & club offered, security, what are current issues on campus… • Visit classes, the library, resident halls, talk to students…get a feel for the campus culture

Math 30 credits • History/Social Science 30 credits • Lab Science 20 credits • Foreign Language 20 credits • Visual/Performing Arts 10 credits • College Prep. Electives 10 credits GPA & SAT I or ACT (UC~ 3 SAT II / subject tests)

  6. University of CA 9 undergraduate campuses very competitive Nov. 30th is the deadline for applications. SAT I, SAT II, personal statement required No letters of recommendation extra-curricular activities also considered for admission

California State Universities 23 campuses enroll the top 33% of high school graduates some CSU’s are very competitive Cal Poly SLO, San Diego State… • Does not require SAT II test or a written essay • Application fee for each campus • On-line applications preferred • GPA and test scores very important • Contact each campus if your grade or program changes

  8. Private Universitiesand Out of State Universities • Follow app due dates • Require written essays • Letters of recommendations • Call each university with specific questions • Need to make sure the school is appropriately accredited

Community Colleges Two kinds of learning: Applied Learning- out in job market in 2 years (certificated programs) Associate of Arts Degree-First 2 years of a four-year college program Advantages of CC: • over 100 campuses • price tag • accessibility • quality teaching-no teaching assistants • Over enrollment in the UC system • Income and career results • rate of transfer to chosen University is high

  10. Timeline Don’t overextend yourself when scheduling for next year. (5 AP classes = 5 college courses) Keep up grades, schools are expecting same performance as sophomore & junior year Take SAT I & II’s by Dec of senior yr.-may want to start taking end of junior year Campus visits are very important (spring break & summer) Inquire for private school information Apply to schools in Nov. Conditional acceptance in March, final acceptance in July

Specialized Schools Advantages career-oriented, technology-based schools-ITT, DeVRY Art/fashion focused schools (FIDM, College of Arts & Crafts) Culinary Arts specialty skills (broadcasting, medical field) into the work force in two years time competitive salary for expert training Scholarships available

  18. All colleges and universities in the US accept either the SAT or the ACT. SAT SUBJECT TESTS will no longer be required by UC’s starting with Class of 2012—but still recommended. SAT and ACT FEE WAIVERS -available to students who qualify for the free or reduced meal plan at school from the college counselor.

  20. DEPORTMENT Cooperation and Work Habits are part of the permanent record and appear on transcript. E=Excellent S=Satisfactory U=Unsatisfactory Conduct and Discipline are on electronic and paper file/not included on transcript.

ATTENDANCE Per LAUSD, the only excused absences are for illness, medical/dental appointments, bereavement for immediate family members and court appearances If a student is absent for more than 5 days due to medical reasons, the student must present a doctor’s note to re-enter school TARDIES: -Period 1 students sent to dean after 10 minutes -Periods 2 – 6 students sent to dean after 5 minutes

  31. AB 540Access to College for ALL! • AB 540 is a California law. This law mandates that qualified undocumented students pay the equivalent of in-state tuition at all public colleges and universities in California.

Regional Occupation Program (Career Technical Programs) • Regional Occupational Program (ROP) is a public education service that provides practical, hands-on career preparation and career guidance. • LAUSD ROP is one of 72 ROP's in the state of California. • ROP classes provide students with technical skills required for particular jobs. • ROP classes also may provide community-based internships in local business and industry sites

  35. Passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) CAHSEE is a two part test (math and language arts) that students MUST PASS to earn a high school diploma.

  36. CAHSEE - MATH • The math test includes: • Basic Arithmetic Problems • Algebra Concepts

  37. CAHSEE – Language Arts The language arts section tests students’ knowledge of: • Reading Comprehension • Grammar/Sentence Structure • Writing Skills

  38. CAHSEE • The test is offered: • Spring semester --for 10th graders • Several times per year for 11th graders • Bi-monthly for 12th graders • CASHEE Intervention/Support is available: • Through LAUSD Online Tutorial • CAHSEE Prep Classes • After-School Tutoring

COMMUNITY SERVICE • If a Venice High School student plans to participate in the GRADUATION CEREMONY next June, it is a VHS requirement that all graduates complete 10 hours of Community Service per years at VHS. (Example: If the student has been at Venice HS for 4 years, he/she would have to complete at least 40 hours of community service by their senior year.) • Community service cards (to report hours) and brochures are available in the Counseling Office and the Magnet Office. • During the 2010-2011 school year, a parent has volunteered to collect and maintain the bookkeeping for community service hours. When her schedule for receiving hours is determined, it will be advertised to the students and posted on the website. • Community service is NOT required to earn an LAUSD diploma.
