  1. SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Part 1 Introduction Course Description ENGR 1201 – Introduction to Engineering – Credit 2 sem. hrs. Introduction to engineering as a discipline and a profes-sion.  Includes instruction in the application of mathematical and scientific principles to the solution of practical problems for the benefit of society. Co-requisite - THEA math and reading. Prerequisite (recommended): High school and/or college pre-Calculus. Part 1

  2. SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Part 1 Introduction Course Outline • Explore careers associated with the “Technology Team”. • Mathematicians • Scientists • Engineers • Managers • Technologists • Technicians • Artisans & Craftspeople • Fill in the “gaps” you may have in preparing for university level courses. • Learn to use basic computational tools including VBA and Maple. Part 1

  3. SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Part 1 Introduction Course Syllabus • Read and study the course syllabus. • Contact me if you cannot accept the responsibilities it contains. • Remember, you will get out of this course what you put into it. • Time and effort expended will determine success. • While success is in part is a good grade, perhaps more important is whether the course prepares you for university study. • Ultimately, success is defined as a bachelor’s or higher degree! Part 1

  4. SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Part 1 Introduction Course Enhanced with WebCT • Additional course content available on WebCT. • The website includes • Syllabus • Email - Must check daily! • Content Modules - Course guide. • Recitations - Your homework assignments. • 3 Regular Exams plus Comprehensive Final. • Lecture presentations - PowerPoint • Other helpful information. • You must have access to a PC and the Internet, either at school or at home. • I expect you to log in at least once a day! Part 1

  5. Homework (10 at 10 pts ea.) A 540 or more 100 points B 480 - 539 3 Regular Exams 300 points C 420 - 479 Attendance/participation 32 points (2 pts per week) D 360 - 419 F 359 or less Final exam 200 points SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Part 1 Introduction Grading Policy Part 1

  6. Syllabus course goal SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Part 1 Introduction Attendance Policy • Regular class attendance is expected of students. • Being late for class is also a serious interruption of instruction. • As students are adults with many responsibilities, an occasional absence might be absolutely necessary.  The student is expected to anticipate such an absence and notify the instructor before missing class.    • The student is responsible for making up any missed class assignments or examinations. Part 1- cg 1

  7. SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Part 1 Introduction Demonstrating Responsibility • Attends class regularly. • Arrives on-time and prepared to work. • Listens during lecture and takes notes.    • Reads and studies text and references carefully. • Studies and actually works the examples. • Follows-up on things not understood; researches/asks questions. • Acknowledges that learning is sequential; no more “learn it for test and then promptly forget it!” • Prepares assignments in advance and turns them in on-time. • Reads and follows instructions. • Does not make excuses; accepts personal responsibility. Part 1- cg 2

  8. SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Part 1 Introduction Getting Started • Go to the SWTJC home page and click on “Online Instruction”. • At the bottom of the page under “Hybrid Courses” click my name to get to my home page. • For ENGR 1201, “Click Here” to go to the course home page.    • Read through until you get to the section with “First Day Study” and “Second Day Study”. Follow these links to complete your first week of outside study for the course. • By next Monday you should be working online with WebCT and well on you way to completing your first assignment. Part 1- cg 2

  9. SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Part 2 Career Exploration The Technology Team "Technological development is a complex process of decision-making and problem solving that involves the coordinated efforts of mathematicians, scientists, engineers, managers, technologists, technicians, and artisans/craftspeople." DLP - Nanotechnology Mirrors by the Millions Boeing 777 Aircraft Part 2- cg 3

  10. SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Mathematician (Applied & Theoretical) - BS, MS, PhD - Investigates quantities, magnitudes, and forms and relates their attributes by the use of numbers and symbols. Part 2 Career ExplorationTech Team Description Scientist (Applied & Theoretical) - BS, MS, PhD - Seeks to understand nature and the universe by applying observation, study, and experimentation and by developing principles and methods. Engineer - BS, MS - Applies a knowledge of mathematics and science to the creative, economical solution of problems using scientific/engineering principles and methods. Manager - BBA, BS (Tech) & MBA - Supervises and controls the personnel and resources for the development and design of new technological products and services. Part 2 - cg 4

  11. SWTJC STEM – ENGR 1201 Part 2 Career ExplorationTech Team Description Technologist - BS, BAT - Implements designs and develops the ideas of scientists and engineers for production, construction, and operation; solving many of the practical problems that arise in the process. Technician- AA, AAS - Applies specialized, less conceptual skills to assist scientists, engineers, and technologists to implement their plans and designs, often assembling, installing, operating, and maintaining equipment, preparing drawings, and estimating costs. Artisan/Craftsperson - Cert/License - Applies specialized manual skills requiring physical dexterity to produce products, or construct larger structures such as roads, plants, and buildings. Part 2 - cg 4

We must recognize that there may be excellence or shoddiness in every line of human endeavor. We must learn to honor excellence no matter how humble the activity and to scorn shoddiness, however exalted the activity: An excellent plumber is infinitely more admirable than an incompetent philosopher. The society which scorns excellence in plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because it is an exalted activity will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water!" John W. Gardner Part 2 - cg 4-6
