Bulk cloudwater sampling • Caltech Active Strand Cloudwater Collector (CASCC) • Teflon collection surfaces (stainless steel also available) • Time resolution as fast as 10-15 minutes possible • Collects complete drop size spectrum (D > 3.5 um) • Composition measurements • pH • Inorganic ions • S(IV) • H2O2 • Fe and Mn • Total Organic Carbon • Total Nitrogen • Organic speciation

Drop size-resolved cloudwater sampling • Size-fractionating CASCC • Teflon collection surfaces (stainless steel also available) • Time resolution as fast as 30 minutes • Collects two drop size fractions, separated at ~15 um • 3-stage version also available • Composition measurements similar to CASCC

  7. Possible additional measurements • CSU 5-stage cloudwater collector • CCN composition using compact CCN coupled with microchip capillary electrophoresis • 0.5-1 hr time resolution • Collaborative effort between Scripps (Roberts) and CSU (Collett and Henry) • Hi-Vol

  8. Aqueous reactions • SO2 dissolves in drops where it is oxidized • by O3, H2O2 and O2 • to nonvolatile sulfate • Path importance is function of • pH • oxidant availability • catalyst availability
