Timeline of events (all times Eastern) 7:59 a.m. – American Airlines 11 leaves Boston for LA with 81 passengers and 11 crew. 8:14 a.m. – United Airlines 175 leaves Boston for LA with 56 passengers and 9 crew. 8:20 a.m. – American Airlines 77 leaves Washington DC for LA with 58 passengers and 6 crew. 8:42 a.m. – United Airlines 93 leaves Newark, NJ for San Francisco with 37 passengers and 7 crew. 8:46 a.m. – American 11 crashes into the North Tower of World Trade Center. 9:03 a.m. – United 175 crashes into the South Tower of World Trade Center. 9:37 a.m. – American 77 crashes into the Pentagon outside Washington DC. 9:59 a.m. – The South Tower collapses. 10:03 a.m. – United 93 crashes into a field near Shanksville, PA. 10:28 a.m. – The North Tower collapses.

Statistics on World Trade Centers • On an average day more than 50,000 people entered and exited each Trade tower. • Each tower had its own zip code. • 200,000 tons of steel • 43,600 windows, 12,000 miles of electric cable • 110 floors each, 97 elevators • The original plans called for buildings strong enough to withstand 200 mph winds and the crash of an airplane. • Architects forgot to calculate the damage caused by burning jet fuel.

Statistics on the attacks • 19 hijackers were involved • In the North Tower, 1,462 people died (1,355 above the impact zone) • The crash of Flt. 11 cut through all 3 staircases, no one above the impact zone was able to get out • In the South Tower, 630 people died • The crash of Flt. 175 cut through two of three staircases • NYFD – 340 firefighters killed • NYPD – 23 officers killed • NY Port Authority – 37 officers killed
