6. THE PEARL BUYERS Dishonest And Avaricious • They buy the pearls from the Indians and have no regrets about cheating them of their livelihood. • They conspire to cheat Kino of what is rightfully his.

7. PLOT KINO TRIES TO SELL THE PEARL Everyone in the community knows that Kino is going to sell his pearl that morning. The neighbours join Kino and his family to town. Kino approaches one Juan Toma’s advises Kino to be careful of the pearl buyers. This is because he has gone against pearl buyers and want to sell his pearl in the city. Therefore he has gone against the system in which they live. However, Kino is determined to go ahead with his plans so that his son will get an education. That night Kino and Juana are unable to sleep as they sense danger. When Kino steps out, he is attacked by someone. Kino is injured . Juana again advises Kino to throw away the pearl as it has given them too many problems. Kino angrily tells her, he will not. of the pearl buyers to sell the pearl. In the hope of cheating Kino, the pearl buyers says that the pearl is too big and clumsy to be of any value. It is only to be kept in a museum. He offers a thousand pesos to Kino. When Kino disagrees, the three other buyers are called in and they too plan to cheat Kino. Kino then yells them that he will sell the pearl in the capital.

8. SETTING • The Settlement The people who live in the settlement on the outskirts of the town are native Mexican-Indians. They work as fisherman and pearl divers, earning very little . Being poor , they live simple lives in brush houses closes to the shore. Their homes are small , with their sleeping area consisting of mats on the floor and the fire pit where they cook. They cook using coal and pieces of brush. The staple food of these people is corn and they make corncakes for their meals . The people in this settlement live as a close-knit community. • THE TOWN The town is called La Paz. The people who live here are well- To-do and have some education, like the doctor. They are Descendants of the Spanish who conquered Mexico four hundred Years ago. These conquerors “had beaten and starved and robbed and despised Kino race….”(p.9).even now, these Spanish treat all of Kino’s race as though they are simple animals. Their homes are made of stone and plaster with ”inner cool garden”, from which can be heard the “singing of caged birds”. Mexican-Indians are employed as servant in their homes.

9. Moral Value • Materialism Kino and the people of La Paz’ obsession for material wealth had led to a lot pf hard ship , suffering , loss of property and most of all death • Racial Discrimination The people of Spanish descent treat the Mexican-Indians as animals .They feel superior. The doctor and the priest and cheat the Mexican-Indian community • Jealously The community becomes envious of Kino and his family after the discovery of the pearl. The intense jealousy leads them to do anything to possess the pearl.
