  5. TOC The next 13 slides will take you step-by-step through the configuration process. To begin, log-on to your PC and double-click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop; or click on Start, then the Internet Explorer icon (upper left). For this first time only, DO NOT open Internet Explorer any other way. Configuring Internet Explorer 7

  6. TOC If you choose “Keep my current default search provider”, Live Search will be your search provider. Do not click on any “Save settings” choices yet. Scroll down to the next question. If you choose “Let me select from a list of other search providers”, a message will appear that says “Click ‘Save Settings’ below to see the list of search providers”. DON’T click “Save settings” …until you get to the BOTTOM of the page. Scroll down to the next question. Step 1: Please choose your default search provider WARNING! If you see the “Save Settings” choices circled in red, DO NOT click on them! Choose either choice, but don’t click on Save Settings yet.

  7. TOC Step 2: Help make your browsing more secure by setting up Phishing Filter Use your cursor to place a check in the checkbox to turn on the automatic Phishing Filter. Later on in this presentation, you will be given more information about the Phishing Filter.

  8. TOC Step 3: See web pages more clearly If the “Always use ClearType to view web pages” is not already checked, use your cursor to place a check in the box.

  9. TOC Step 4: Help customize web pages to your current location If the “Use the current settings: English (United States)” radio button is not already selected, then use your cursor to select it.

  10. TOC Step 5: Help Improve Internet Explorer: Join the Customer Experience Improvement Program Donot check the checkbox for participating in the Customer Experience Improvement Program.

  11. TOC Step 6: Click on the “Save settings” button Click on the “Save settings” button

  12. TOC If you chose “Keep my current default search provider” in Step 1, go to slides 14-16, then skip to slide 19 and proceed to the end. If you chose “Let me select from a list of other search providers” in Step 1, go to slides 17-18, then proceed to the end. OR Step 7A Step 7B

  13. TOC Step 7A: Choose “Go to your home page” If you chose “Keep my current default search provider” in Step 1, this dialog box will appear. Choose the third choice, “Go to your home page”, by clicking on the link.

  14. TOC Step 7A: If the “Create Shortcut?” dialog box appears, answer “No”

  15. TOC Congratulations! You have successfully configured Internet Explorer 7 and your default home page appears. Skip slides 17-18 and go to the remaining slides to become more familiar with Internet Explorer 7.

  16. TOC Step 7B: Choose your default search provider If you chose “Let me select from a list of other search providers” in Step 1, you will see this screen. Under “See Global Search Guides”, click on the search provider that you would like to be your default provider – such as Google.

  17. TOC Step 7B: Add your choice as your default search provider • The “Add Search Provider” dialog box will appear automatically. • Use your cursor to check “Make this my default search provider”. • Then click the “Add Provider” button.

  18. TOC Menu Bar Tools Icon To view the Menu Bar permanently, use the drop down menu for the Tools icon (upper right) and select “Menu Bar”. To view the Menu Bar temporarily, hit the “Alt” key on your keyboard at any time. To Find the Menu Bar(File,Edit,View,Favorites,Tools,Help)

TOC Home button To Change Your Home Page • In Internet Explorer, go to the page you want to use as your Home Page (You must actually be on the page you want as your Home Page before proceeding to the next step) • Click the arrow to the right of the Home button (house icon); then click Add or Change home page • In the Add or Change Home Page dialog box, you can click on “Use this web page as your only home page” • Click Yes to save your changes • For other options, use Help and search under “To change your home page”

  20. TOC To Use the Help Feature While you are becoming familiar with Internet Explorer 7, you are encouraged to use the Help feature. It’s easy to use and understand –so do use it as your first recourse! To display the Help feature, hit the “F1” key on your keyboard.

TOC Instant Search Box To Search Using the Instant Search Box • The Instant Search Box is located in the upper right-hand corner (next to the Address Bar) • Simply place your cursor in the box (or hit CTRL + E) and type in a keyword or phrase; then press Enter • For complete details, use Help and search under: “Finding the information you want on the Internet”

  22. TOC Address Bar To Search Using the Address Bar • The Address Bar is located at the top of the screen • Type Find, Go, or ? followed by a keyword, website name, or phrase; then press Enter • For complete details, use Help and search under: “Finding the information you want on the Internet”

TOC The AutoComplete Feature • You may get a message asking if you would like to turn on the AutoComplete feature. • The AutoComplete feature saves the text you've previously entered for web addresses, forms, and passwords, and retrieves that same text for you if you begin to type the same information again later. • For more information, use the Index in Help and look under “AutoComplete”.

  24. TOC Search Options Button To Change the Default Search Provider • Click the down arrow to the right of the Search Options button • Click Change Search Defaults • Select the provider you want to use for searches • Click Set Default • Click OK

TOC How Do I Get My Toolbars Back? • If the first two rows of your toolbars should disappear, you are probably in “full screen” view. • Move your cursor to the top of the screen to make your toolbars come into view. • Click on the “Tools” icon; then click on “Full Screen” to de-select it (by removing the checkmark).

  26. TOC Tabs Using Tabbed Browsing Tabbed browsing allows you to open multiple websites without having to open another Internet Explorer browser window! Now, you can open web pages on new tabs – and switch from tab to tab!

TOC New Tab Button Using Tabbed Browsing To open a new tab, do one of the following: • Use the Ctrl key + “T” on your keyboard • Click the New Tab Buttonbefore navigating to your next web page • Use the Ctrl key while clicking on an Internet link • Use “Alt” + Enter from the Address Bar or the Instant Search Box

TOC Tabs Using Tabbed Browsing To close a tab: • Click on the tab you want to close – click on the “X” that appears on the right-hand side of the tab (Note: You must have more than one tab open) • Or, Click on the tab you want to close and use “Ctrl” + “W” on your keyboard For complete details, use Help and search under “Tabbed Browsing: Frequently Asked Questions”

  29. TOC Quick Tabs Button Using Quick Tabs • Internet Explorer displays up to 10 tabs on the screen. To display all your tabs – whether you can see all of them or not – click on the Quick Tabs button.(Note: The Quick Tabs button is only visible when you have two or more web pages open) All open web pages will be displayed as thumbnails. Click on the page you want to view. • Or – you may click on the down arrow next to the Quick Tabs button to display a list of all your open websites. To switch to a different site, click the site name • For complete details, use Help and search under “Using Quick Tabs”

TOC Saving Your Tabs When You Exit Internet Explorer • When you close Internet Explorer after using tabbed browsing, you may get a dialog box that asks “Do you want to close all tabs?” • Click “Show Options” in the bottom left corner. • Choosing the first option will enable you to save your tabs and open them again the next time you use Internet Explorer. • If you click on the “Close Tabs” button, your tabs will not be available the next time you open Internet Explorer.

TOC Information Bar Using the Information Bar The only time the Information Bar will pop into view is when you visit a site that prompts Internet Explorer to display information about security, downloads, blocked pop-up windows, etc. You will see the Bar displayed at the top of the web page. Click on the message to see additional information or to take action. For complete details, use Help and search under “Understanding the Internet ExplorerInformation Bar”

  32. TOC The Phishing Filter • You may get a message asking if you would like to turn the Phishing Filter (pronounced like “fishing”) on or off – you should say you would like to turn it on. What is the Phishing Filter? • The Phishing Filter is a new feature in Internet Explorer that helps detect phishing websites. Phishing websites trick computer users into revealing personal or financial information for identity theft purposes.

  33. TOC The Phishing Filter • If the site you visit is on a list of reported phishing websites, Internet Explorer will display a warning web page and a notification on the Address bar. From the warning web page, you can continue or close the page. If the site contains characteristics common to a phishing website but isn’t listed, Internet Explorer will only notify you in the Address bar that it might possibly be a phishing website. • For more information, including how to turn the Phishing Filter on and off, use the Index in Help (hit the “F1” key on your keyboard) and look under “Phishing Filter: frequently asked questions”

TOC Zoom Tool Using the Zoom Tool The Zoom Tool enables you to enlarge or reduce the view of a web page – not just font, but everything on the page. • Click the down arrow by the Zoom Tool (bottom right corner) and select the % you want • With your keyboard, hit Ctrl + to zoom in or Ctrl - to zoom out • For complete details, use Help and search under “Zoom in on a web page”

TOC Green Arrow Favorites Icons Favorites Center To keep the Favorites Center open all the time, click the green arrow icon (Pin the Favorites Center) at the top of the Favorites Center (upper right). Using The Favorites Center Clicking on the Star icon will open the Favorites Center. You’ll be able to open folders you’ve created and visit your favorite sites. Clicking on the Star/Plus Sign icon will allow you to add a favorite or organize your favorites.

  36. TOC Using The Favorites Center • To find out more about Favorites, search Help under: • “To add a web page to your list of favorite pages” • “Keeping track of your favorite web pages” • “How do I organize my favorites?” • “To find websites you have visited”

  37. TOC History Button Favorites Center Finding the History Button • On the toolbar, click the Favorites Center button (Star icon) • Click the History button (clock icon) • If you click the down arrow next to the History button, you can sort by date, site, most visited, etc.

  38. TOC Links Bar Using the Links Bar The Links Bar is displayed at the top of the Internet Explorer window and is used as a convenient place to store links to web pages you visit very often. The advantage of the Links Bar is that it is much quicker than going into your Favorites folders!

TOC Links Bar Tools Button Using the Links Bar To add a web page to the Links Bar: • If the Links Bar is not already displayed, turn on the Links Bar by clicking the Tools button (upper right corner), then click Toolbars, then select Links • If you still can’t see the Links Bar, it’s probably locked on the right side of the screen. To unlock it, click the Tools button, then click Toolbars, then click “Lock the Toolbars” to clear the check mark. Drag the Links toolbar down so you can see it. • Navigate to the web page you want to add and do one of the following: • Drag the icon or the URL for the page from the Address bar to the Links Bar • Drag a link from the web page to the Links Bar • To view a web page in your Links Bar, just click on the link • You can organize your links by dragging them to different locations on the Links Bar • For more info, look in Help under “To add a page to the Links Bar”
