  5. The Monster Children • Gaea and Uranus gave birth to 3 Cyclops • And 3 Hecatoncheires

The Titan Children Cronus-The Ruling Titan Rhea-Wife of Cronus Oceanus-the unending stream of water encircling the world Hyperion-the Titan of light, the father of the sun, the moon, and the dawn. Prometheus-wisest of the titans, created man and gave him fire. Atlas-fought against Zeus. Zeus punished Atlas by making him hold up the earth for all eternity.

  10. other Monsters • Medusa Beheaded by Perseus, who used her head as a weapon until finally giving it to Athena. Athena mounted it on her shield and it still retained its ability to change her enemies to stone.

The War • Cronus kills his father (Uranus) whose blood becomes more monster children, and becomes supreme Titan • Cronus and Rhea have children. • Cronus eats all the children, fearing one of them will grow up and overthrow him as king. • Rhea tricks Cronus with the sixth Child-Zeus • Rhea tricks Cronus by giving him a rock wrapped in a baby blanket, allowing Zeus to escape. • Zeus grows up to be a very strong god • Zeus goes back to Mt. Olympus, gives Cronus a poisonous drink that makes him vomit up all the children he swallowed. • Zeus defeats Cronus and becomes ruler of all the gods.

  17. Hades • lord of the underworld, ruling over the dead. • Brother of Zeus • He doesn’t allow any of his subjects to leave. • He is also the god of wealth • He rarely leaves the underworld. • Did NOT live on Mt. Olympus

  18. Poseidon • God of Sea and protector of all waters. • His weapon is a trident, which can shake the earth, and shatter any object. • He is second only to Zeus in power amongst the gods. • Tried to impress Demeter by making her a beautiful animal—the first Horse.

  19. Hestia • Sister of Zeus • Goddess of Hearth (home)

  20. Demeter • Goddess of corn, grain, and the harvest. • Makes the crops grow each year. • Made Winter and Spring

  21. Ares • Ares is the son of Zeus and Hera. • He is the god of war. • He is considered murderous and bloodstained but, also a coward.

  22. Athena • Goddess of reason, intelligent activity, arts and literature. • Athena is the daughter of Zeus. She sprang full grown in armor from his forehead, thus has no mother. • She is the embodiment of wisdom, reason, and purity. • She was Zeus's favorite child and was allowed to use his weapons including his thunderbolt. • Her favorite city is Athens.

  23. Apollo • Apollo is the son of Zeus. • He is the god of music, playing a golden lyre. The Archer, far shooting with a silver bow. The god of healing who taught man medicine. The god of light. The god of truth, who can not speak a lie. • One of Apollo's more important daily tasks is to harness his chariot with four horses an drive the Sun across the sky.

  24. Hephaestus • Hephaestus is the son of Zeus and Hera. Sometimes it is said that Hera alone produced him and that he has no father. • He is the only god to be physically ugly. • He is lame. (Can not walk) • He is the god of fire and the forge. • He is the smith and armorer of the gods. He uses a volcano as his forge. • He is kind and peace loving

  25. Artemis • She was goddess of the hunt, the moon, and the natural environment. Artemis is the daughter of Zeus. • She is the lady of the wild things. • She is the huntsman of the gods.

  26. Hermes • He was the cleverest of the Olympian gods, and messenger to all the other gods. • He is Zeus’ son. • He is the fastest of the gods. • He wears winged sandals, a winged hat, and carries a magic wand.

  27. Aphrodite • Goddess of love and beauty • Married to Hephaestus
