Understanding Addition: Key Concepts and Examples

This chapter delves into the fundamentals of addition, starting with the identification of addends, such as in the problem 875 + 413 = 1288. It emphasizes the importance of estimating sums, demonstrated with 56 + 95, where an estimate would be 60 + 100 = 160. The chapter also clarifies critical terms including "expression," which comprises numbers and operation signs without yielding a sum, as well as "number sentence," which incorporates both numbers and operation symbols, culminating in an answer. Additionally, it explains the "not equal to" symbol, highlighting the distinction between different numeric values.

  1. Chapter Four Addition

  2. sum - the answer to an addition problem 875 + 413 1, 288 (is the sum)

  3. 2. addends – the numbers you add together 181 + 254 = 435 181 and 254 are the addends.

  4. 3. estimate – find out about how much or how many 56 + 95 The estimate would be 60 + 100 = 160

  5. 2. expression – part of a number sentence that combines numbers and operation signs Ex. 44 + 52 The expression does not include the sum or difference.

  6. 3. number sentence – sentence that includes numbers, operation symbols or a relation symbols Example: 5 + 3 =8 A number sentence does include the answer!!

  7. 5. not equal to – ( = ) relation symbol used to show that two numbers are not equal to each other Ex. $18 = $26 4 + 3 = 7 but 4 – 3 = 7
