Duration: 24 months
Budget: RM 99K (GRA-2 4 months, travelling, raw material
Research background
Concrete production
Carbon dioxide emission
Production of new binder using local waste material to reduce carbon dioxide emission
29. Example 5 Objective(s) of the Research
This study embarks on the following objectives:
To investigate the possibility of producing a Non-Cement Concrete Composite Binder (NCCCB) with 100% local industrial by-products (slag) and biogenic wastes (rice husk ash, timber fly ash and palm oil fuel ash).
To assess the new mechano-chemical activation technique for producing composite binder without going through the calcination and clinkering stage as OPC does and thus reducing CO2 emission to the environment from cement production.
To make recommendations based on the new findings on production of Non-Cement Concrete Composite Binder.

30. Example 5 Methodology
Description of Methodology
Collection and Characterization of Industrial and Biogenic Wastes.
     i. At first, survey of various sources of biogenic wastes and industrial by-products will be carried out. Then physical and chemical properties of rice husk ash, palm oil fuel ash, timber fly ash, and slag will be determined using appropriate tests.
ii. Based on the results of survey, physical and chemical tests, sources of wastes will be confirmed. Then required amount of wastes will be collected from these sources.

31. Example 5 Evaluation of New Mechano-chemical Activation Technique
The selected industrial and biogenic wastes will be mixed at various proportions. Then the mixes will be subjected to mechano-chemical activation using ball mill. They will be subjected to variation of duration, speed, and number and size of balls in the ball mill to get the optimum fineness. The limits for using various wastes will also be determined. These fineness and properties will be compared with those of ordinary portland cement.

32. Example 5 Testing and Evaluation of NCCCB Composition
First, the properties of NCCCB composition will be evaluated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results will be compared with those of OPC. Then the NCCCB paste will be tested for setting times and flow properties. After that, the mortar of NCCCB will be tested for compressive strength. The results will be compared with those of OPC. From these comparisons, the possibility of making new NCCCB will be ascertained.
Analysis and Reports
During this testing time, a lot of data will be gathered. Later analysis of these data will be done and the findings of the research will be extensively reported. From all the findings of the research, recommendations on the production of quaternary blended NCCCB will be made.

Milestone-3: Setting time and compressive strength of NCCCB. Date: August, 2011.
Milestone-4: Final evaluation and recommendation on NCCCB. Date: December, 2011.

36. Example 5 Expected Results/Benefit
Novel theories/New findings/Knowledge
New type of non-cement concrete composite binder (NCCCB) will be developed that can be used instead of ordinary portland cement in production of concrete.
Research Publications
Findings of the research will be extensively reported and published in the national and international journals, conference proceedings, and will be presented in seminars/workshops.

37. Example 5 Specific or Potential Applications
It is believed that quaternary blended non-cement concrete composite binder (NCCCB) could significantly contribute to achieving the needed balance between the industrys quest for high-performance products and the increasingly restrictive environmental regulations. Synergistic effects could allow individual component ingredients in such blends to compensate for their mutual shortcomings, furthering the extent of the use of environmentally efficient binders and promoting their field implementation. NCCCB will provide a unique opportunity to produce environmentally-friendly concrete with tailor-made properties, and may indeed constitute the next generation of binder products.
