  1. Mark

  2. “Your sister church in Babylon, also chosen by God, sends you greetings, and so does my son Mark.” (1 Peter 5:13 – GN)

  3. “Jesus went to the territory near the town of Caesarea Philippi, where he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ ‘Some say John the Baptist,’ they answered. ‘Others say Elijah, while others say Jeremiah or some other prophet.’ ‘What about you?’ he asked them. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ ‘Good for you, Simon son of John!’ answered Jesus. ‘For this truth did not come to you from any human being, but it was given to you directly by my Father in heaven. • This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out. And that’s not all. You will have complete and free access to God’s kingdom, keys to open any and every door: no more barriers between heaven and earth, earth and heaven. A yes on earth is yes in heaven. A no on earth is no in heaven.” (Matthew 16:13-17 – GN; 18,19 – The Message)

  4. “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my Savior, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the strength of my salvation, my stronghold….Who is God but the LORD? Who is a rock except our God?” (Psalms 18:2,31 – GOD’S WORD) • “They drank from the spiritual rock that went with them; and that rock was Christ himself.” (1 Corinthians 10:4 – GN)

  5. “Come to the Lord, the living stone rejected by people as worthless but chosen by God as valuable. Come as living stones, and let yourselves be used in building the spiritual temple, where you will serve as holy priests to offer spiritual and acceptable sacrifices to God through Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 2:4-5 – GN) • “You, too, are built upon the foundation laid by the apostles and prophets, the cornerstone being Christ Jesus himself. He is the one who holds the whole building together and makes it grow into a sacred temple dedicated to the Lord. In union with him you too are being built together with all the others into a place where God lives through his Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:20-22 – GN)

  6. “We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we know the real God. We are in the one who is real, his Son Jesus Christ. This Jesus Christ is the real God and eternal life.” (1 John 5:20 – GN)

  7. “This is the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” (Mark 1:1 – GN)

  8. “A man suffering from a dreaded skin disease came to Jesus, knelt down, and begged him for help. ‘If you want to,’ he said, ‘you can make me clean.’ Jesus was filled with pity, and reached out and touched him. ‘I do want to,’ he answered. ‘Be clean!’” (Mark 1:40-41 – GN) • “How can I give you up, O Ephraim! How can I surrender you and cast you off, O Israel! How can I make you as Admah or how can I treat you as Zeboiim. My heart recoils within Me; My compassions are kindled together.” (Hosea 11:8 - Amplified)

  9. “Then Jesus went back to the synagogue, where there was a man who had a paralyzed hand. Some people were there who wanted to accuse Jesus of doing wrong; so they watched him closely to see whether he would cure the man on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man, ‘Come up here to the front.’ Then he asked the people, ‘What does our Law allow us to do on the Sabbath? To help or to harm? To save someone's life or to destroy it?’ But they did not say a thing. Jesus was angry as he looked around at them, but at the same time he felt sorry for them, because they were so stubborn and wrong. Then he said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out, and it became well again. So the Pharisees left the synagogue… • and met at once with some members of Herod's party, and they made plans to kill Jesus.” (Mark 3:1-6 – GN)

  10. “There were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his disciples didn't even have time to eat. So he said to them, ‘Let us go off by ourselves to some place where we will be alone and you can rest a while.’ So they started out in a boat by themselves to a lonely place. Many people, however, saw them leave and knew at once who they were; so they went from all the towns and ran ahead by land and arrived at the place ahead of Jesus and his disciples. When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw this large crowd, and his heart was filled with pity for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began to teach them many things.” (Mark 6:31-34)

  11. “…some messengers came from Jairus' house and told him, ‘Your daughter has died. Why bother the Teacher any longer?’ Jesus paid no attention to what they said, but told him, ‘Don't be afraid, only believe.’ Then he did not let anyone else go on with him except Peter and James and his brother John. They arrived at Jairus' house, where Jesus saw the confusion and heard all the loud crying and wailing. He went in and said to them, ‘Why all this confusion? Why are you crying? The child is not dead---she is only sleeping!’ They started making fun of him, so… • …he put them all out, took the child's father and mother and his three disciples, and went into the room where the child was lying. He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha, koum," which means, "Little girl, I tell you to get up!" She got up at once and started walking around. (She was twelve years old.) When this happened, they were completely amazed. But Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone, and he said, ‘Give her something to eat.’” (Mark 5:35-42 – GN)

  12. “As Jesus was starting on his way again, a man ran up, knelt before him, and asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to receive eternal life?’ ‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus asked him. ‘No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not accuse anyone falsely; do not cheat; respect your father and your mother.' ‘Teacher,’ the man said, ‘ever since I was young, I have obeyed all these commandments.’ Jesus looked straight at him with love and said, ‘You need only one thing. Go and sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven; then come and follow me.’” (Mark 10:17-21 – GN)

  13. “They came to Capernaum, and after going indoors Jesus asked his disciples, ‘What were you arguing about on the road?’ But they would not answer him, because on the road they had been arguing among themselves about who was the greatest. • Jesus sat down, called the twelve disciples, and said to them, ‘Whoever wants to be first must place himself last of all and be the servant of all.’ Then he took a child and had him stand in front of them. He put his arms around him and said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes in my name one of these children, welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me, welcomes not only me but also the one who sent me.’” (Mark 9:33-37 – GN)

  14. “James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus and asked, ‘Teacher, will you do us a favor?’ Jesus asked them what they wanted, and they answered, ‘When you come into your glory, please let one of us sit at your right side and the other at your left.’ Jesus told them, ‘You don't really know what you're asking!’… • When the ten other disciples heard this, they were angry with James and John. But Jesus called the disciples together and said: You know that those foreigners who call themselves kings like to order their people around. And their great leaders have full power over the people they rule. But don't act like them. If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others. And if you want to be first, you must be everyone's slave. The Son of Man did not come to be a slave master, but a slave who will give his life to rescue many people.” (Mark 10:35-45 – CEV)

  15. “Your task is to single-mindedly serve Christ …Strength is for service, not status. Each one of us needs to look after the good of the people around us, asking ourselves, ‘How can I help?’ That’s exactly what Jesus did.” (Romans 14:18; 15:1-3 – The Message)

  16. “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” (Gandhi) • “There is nothing to make you like other human beings so much as doing things for them.” (Zora Hurston) • “Only a life lived in service to others is worth living (Einstein) • “Unselfishness, the principle of God’s kingdom, is the principle that Satan hates; its very existence he denies. From the beginning of the great controversy he has endeavored to prove God’s principles of action to be selfish, and he deals in the same way with all who serve God. To disprove Satan’s claim is the work of Christ and of all who bear His name. It was to give in His own life an illustration of unselfishness that Jesus came in the form of humanity. And all who accept this principle are to be workers together with Him in demonstrating it in practical life.” (Education, pg 154)

  17. “Instead, let love make you serve one another. For the whole Law is summed up in one commandment: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’” (Galatians 5:13-14 – GN) • “Do your work, not for mere pay, but from a real desire to serve…And all of you must put on the apron of humility, to serve one another; for the scripture says, ‘God resists the proud, but shows favor to the humble.’” (1 Peter 5:2-5 – GN)

  18. “Then the King will say to the people on his right, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father! Come and possess the kingdom which has been prepared for you ever since the creation of the world. I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me a drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me.’” (Matthew 25:34-36 – GN)

  19. “Jesus knew that the Father had given him complete power; he knew that he had come from God and was going to God. So, he rose from the table, took off his outer garment, and tied a towel around his waist.” (John 13:3,4 – GN) • “Now that you know this truth, how happy you will be if you put it into practice.” (John 13:17 – GN) • “I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” (Albert Schweitzer)

  20. “It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready when he comes. What I’m about to tell you is true. The master will then dress himself so he can serve them. He will have them take their places at the table. And he will come and wait on them.” (Luke 12:37 – NIRV)

  21. “Then Jesus left that place, went to the province of Judea, and crossed the Jordan River. Crowds came flocking to him again, and he taught them, as he always did. Some Pharisees came to him and tried to trap him. ‘Tell us,’ they asked, ‘does our Law allow a man to divorce his wife?’ • Jesus answered with a question, ‘What law did Moses give you?’ Their answer was, ‘Moses gave permission for a man to write a divorce notice and send his wife away.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Moses wrote this law for you because you are so hard to teach. But in the beginning, at the time of creation, 'God made them male and female,' as the scripture says. 'And for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife, and the two will become one.' So they are no longer two, but one. No human being must separate, then, what God has joined together.’” (Mark 10:1-9 – GN) • “He wrote this command for you because you're heartless.” (GOD’S WORD) • “…because of the hardness of your heart.” (Amplified) • “…as a concession to your heard-hearted wickedness.” (NLT) • “…because your hearts were hard.” (NIV)

  22. “I did his, because they had rejected my commands, broken my laws, profaned the Sabbath, and worshiped the same idols their ancestors had served. Then I gave them laws that are not good and commands that do not bring life.” (Ezekiel 20:24,25 – GN)

  23. “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth…’” (Matthew 5:38 – GN) • Cities of refuge • The law • “What, then, was the purpose of the Law? It was added in order to show what wrongdoing is…” (Galatians 3:19 – GN) • “…laws are made, not for good people, but for lawbreakers and criminals, for the godless and sinful, for those who are not religious or spiritual…” (1 Timothy 1:9 – GN) • “Do not have sexual intercourse with any of your relatives. Do not disgrace your father by having intercourse with your mother. You must not disgrace your own mother…No man or woman is to have sexual relations with an animal; that perversion makes you ritually unclean” (Leviticus 18:7,23)

  24. “If you happen to see your enemy’s cow or donkey running loose, take it back to him. If his donkey has fallen under its load, help him get the donkey to its feet again; don’t just walk off.” (Exodus 23:4,5 – GN) • “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:5 – GN) • “Do not mistreat foreigners who are living in your land. Treat them as you would an Israelite, and love them as you love yourselves.” (Leviticus 19:3,4 – GN)

  25. “The people of Israel are as stubborn as mules. How can I feed them like lambs in a meadow?” (Hosea 4:16 – GN)

  26. “Peter answered, ‘I will never leave you, even though all the rest do!’ Jesus said to Peter, ‘I tell you that before the rooster crows two times tonight, you will say three times that you do not know me.’ Peter answered even more strongly, ‘I will never say that, even if I have to die with you!’” (Mark 14:29-31 – GN)

  27. “They arrested Jesus and took him away into the house of the High Priest; and Peter followed at a distance. A fire had been lit in the center of the courtyard, and Peter joined those who were sitting around it. When one of the servant women saw him sitting there at the fire, she looked straight at him and said, ‘This man too was with Jesus!’ But Peter denied it, ‘Woman, I don't even know him!’ After a little while a man noticed Peter and said, ‘You are one of them, too!’ But Peter answered, ‘Man, I am not!’ And about an hour later another man insisted strongly, ‘There isn't any doubt that this man was with Jesus, because he also is a Galilean!’ But Peter answered, ‘Man, I don't know what you are talking about!’ At once, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. The Lord turned around and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered that the Lord had said to him, ‘Before the rooster crows tonight, you will say three times that you do not know me.’ Peter went out and wept bitterly.” (Luke 22:54-62 – GN)

  28. “So they entered the tomb, where they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe---and they were alarmed. ‘Don't be alarmed,’ he said. ‘I know you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is not here---he has been raised! Look, here is the place where he was placed. Now go and give this message to his disciples, including Peter: ‘He is going to Galilee ahead of you; there you will see him, just as he told you.’” (Mark 16:5-7 – GN)

  29. “I passed on to you what I received, which is of the greatest importance: that Christ died for our sins, as written in the Scriptures; that he was buried and that he was raised to life three days later, as written in the Scriptures; that he appeared to Peter and then to all twelve apostles. Then he appeared to more than five hundred of his followers at once, most of whom are still alive, although some have died. Then he appeared to James, and afterward to all the apostles. Last of all he appeared also to me...” (1 Corinthians 15:3-8 – GN)
