  2. Step 1 – Analyze purpose – FIND VERBS or ACTIONS that DIRECT YOU • Locate key words and phrases that state direction. • CIRCLE THEM. Determine what those words mean:

  3. Step 2 – Clarify the topic- SIMPLFY • Underline any key words or phrases that show me what I am supposed to be talking about. • Ex – Am I talking about a characters feelings or actions?

  4. Step 3 – Identify the Audience • Does the question tell me who will be reading my paper? • If it doesn’t, then the reader is a teacher (no contractions, no slang).

  5. Step 4 – Find Format • Identify key words (by adding a star *) that indicate if you are writing in • Informative format(Explain) • Argumentative (Claim, Counterclaim, Persuade) • Narrative format (elements).

  6. Step 5 – Examine Expectations • How am I being evaluated on this task? • Did I meet the criteria?

  7. In “Growing”, Nate and his family play a role in the fight for American independence. Explain how the text supports the idea that Nate’s family plays a role in the war. Cite at least 2 details from the story to support your response.

  8. In your own words, summarize how Nate feels up until the point when he meets the commander. Support your answer with details from the story.

  9. Imagine that you are Nate from the story “Growing”. Write a journal entry from the Nate’s point of view describing what happened in the story.
