  1. Year 3 Boronia KDC Water Conservation Project

  2. Stage 1 After learning about the Water Cycle, investigating the importance of water and being amazed by the amount of water ‘consumed’ by flushing a toilet or through a dripping tap...we set off to work! We then conducted a water audit of our school, to see if there was anything that needed fixing.

  3. Results of our water audit After collecting the results and discussing some of the key areas and issues in our school (that needed improving), it was quite evident to a lot of us that our school has already gone to great lengths to conserve drinking water. Our mission was to find out if the students of Erskineville Public School (ERKO) were water wise and actually utilising the impressive infrastructures that our school has in place.

  4. Surveys As a class we derived a series of questions that would inform us if the students of ERKO were water wise. Then we set off to different classes to conduct our surveys.

  5. The results were in • After collecting the results of the surveys it was quite evident to a lot of us that we needed to change student’s water behaviours. • The school’s infrastructure is effective in conserving water but we needed to change the behaviours of the users by raising awareness and thinking of a way to influence user behaviour.

  6. Generating Ideas In groups, we mind mapped ideas on how we could change or influence student’s behaviours. Some of our suggestions were: • Have a Water Day where students dress up in blue • Write a special newsletter item to remind everyone of the importance of water • Create a play/song and perform it in assembly • Think of ways of advertising that it’s good to save water

  7. The Verdict We all agreed that the best way to save drinking water in our school was to paint a series of murals to encourage water wise behaviour. As a class we decided to focus on three areas of our school. • Water tanks • Toilets • Taps and Bubblers

  8. The Sites Water Tanks Because the message can be long lasting. The rainwater tank brings the positive message that something is already been done to help save water but it doesn’t end with getting a tank. We need to show people that a lot can be achieved if water is saved as a lot can be lost if we don’t!

  9. Toilets Our research taught us that a lot of drinking water is wasted each day through using the full flush button on a toilet when only a half flush is needed. By painting a clear message on the back of toilet doors students will be constantly be reminded to be water wise.

  10. Taps and Bubblers This bubbler system was identified as an essential area for a water wise message. As it is in a central location and the main bubbler system in the school.

  11. Design Brief Design and produce a method of promoting water saving behaviours for students and teachers. The design must cater for all students from K-6, be visually appealing, affordable and easy to make.

  12. Initial Ideas We then spilt up into three separate groups each group focused on a different site. We then drafted our individual ideas.

  13. Design Advice We then sought some advice from someone who has expertise in this area. He got us thinking about our audience and the purpose of painting murals to save water. We talked about using contrasting colours so that the message could catch the audience’s attention. We also discussed the possibility of using specialised paint to ensure that the message we painted was long lasting. We then used this new knowledge to draft a second design

  14. Second Draft We then individually designed a second draft incorporating the advice we had been given.

  15. Final Draft In our design groups we then chose a final design. Some groups incorporated a variety of ideas from various drafts while another group decided to combine everyone's draft and collaborate them into one big mural. Each mural contained different messages and all had different themes.

  16. Our Proposal We think our chosen designs will hopefully change some student’s behaviours as they’ll keep seeing the positive message. We’re inviting our principle and proposing our idea to her! Tanks Toilets Taps and Bubblers
