MSCD7-1: Students will identify and evaluate work ethics and behavior characteristics needed for success in a career and in life. • Demonstrate the importance of positive work ethics in relation to success (Appearance, attendance, attitude, character, communication, cooperation, productivity, organizational skills, respect, and teamwork). • Identify examples of appropriate and inappropriate personal behaviors in specific school, social, and work situations. • Assess the consequences of positive and negative work ethic choices.

Attitude • The way you think or feel about a person, place or thing or even a given situation. • Your outlook and reaction to a situation • Your reaction is what other people see. • The way you feel about life in general • Can be influenced by others • According to Webster, manner, disposition, or feeling with regard to a person or thing; position or posture of the body.

Behavior • Your actions resulting from your attitude and personality. • The way you act or present yourself, actions in an given environment. • Can be influenced by others • According to Webster, one’s manner of behaving or acting. The action or reaction of a material, machine under given circumstances.

  7. Acceptable Attitudes & Behaviors • Positive • Things that you are supposed to do • Following rules and regulations • Appropriate • People will like to be around you • Help you meet job requirements • Help you in the future • Help to keep you employed

Unacceptable Attitudes & Behaviors • Negative • Things that you are not supposed to do: • Not following rules and regulations • Inappropriate • People do not like to be around you • Will not allow you to meet job requirements • Hurts you in the future • Help to keep you unemployed • Breaking the laws • Helps you to be unsuccessful in the future

Behavior is your actions resulting from your attitude, personality and environment. • Work Ethics is a combination of your values, personality, attitude and pride in your work. • Including but not limited to honesty, pride, purpose, feelings, visions, teamwork, character, productivity, appearance and communication.

  11. Work ethics • Work ethic may include many things but it is really your set of values. • Ideally the better your work ethics the better your work position. • You work ethics will guide you in a given situation?

  12. Work ethic involves • honesty (not lying, stealing, or cheating), • doing a job well • having pride • valuing what one does • showing people who you really are. • having sense of purpose and feeling • being a part of a greater vision or plan is vital • What will you do in a given situation?

The Number 1 priority of Georgia’s employers is to improve the work ethics of present and future employees. • Employers are expresses concern that a strong work ethic is increasingly difficult to find among employees and job applicants. • Two statewide surveys of Georgia employers also identified interpersonal skills and positive attitudes toward work as among the most important qualifications in hiring workers (Occupational Research Group, 1996, 1997).

  14. The U.S. Department of Laborestimates that 80 percent of workers who lose their jobs do so not because of lack of occupational skills, but because of poor work ethics. • The magnitude of this issue mandates the immediate attention.
