  1. The Life of King Saul

  2. The life of King Saul is a tragedy we can learn from. • We have both good and bad examples to teach us! (1 Cor 10:11-12)

  3. The life of King Saul is a tragedy we can learn from. 1 Corinthians 10:11-12- Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.

  4. The life of King Saul is a tragedy we can learn from. We are going to see the destruction of a good man. We need to know that this can happen. God wants to clearly warn us of this possible path. (Heb 3:12)

  5. The life of King Saul is a tragedy we can learn from. Hebrews 3:12- Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;

  6. The life of King Saul is a tragedy we can learn from. Our God knows our limits and will protect us. What happens when we in pride start looking for the praise of men?

  7. God chose the best man to be king Saul was going to lead a carnal people that did not trust God. (1 Sam 8:5-8)

  8. God chose the best man to be king 1 Samuel 8:5-8- and said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations." 6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." So Samuel prayed to the LORD.

  9. God chose the best man to be king 7 And the LORD said to Samuel, "Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. 8 "According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day -- with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods -- so they are doing to you also.

  10. God chose the best man to be king This was going to be a place of great tests for Saul. This could be a great opportunity for growth. (James 1:2-3)

  11. God chose the best man to be king James 1:2-3- My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.

  12. God chose the best man to be king God chose Saul because he was the best man to be king. (1 Sam 9:16-17)

  13. God chose the best man to be king 1 Samuel 9:16-17 - "Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him commander over My people Israel, that he may save My people from the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to me." 17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said to him, "There he is, the man of whom I spoke to you. This one shall reign over My people."

  14. God chose the best man to be king Saul was a faithful servant to his father. No task was “below him” and he was mindful of what was best for his father. (1 Sam 9:3-5)

  15. God chose the best man to be king 1 Samuel 9:3-5 - Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul's father, were lost. And Kish said to his son Saul, "Please, take one of the servants with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys."

  16. God chose the best man to be king …. 5 When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, "Come, let us return, lest my father cease caring about the donkeys and become worried about us."

  17. God chose the best man to be king He sought godly council. (1 Sam 9:6-8)

  18. God chose the best man to be king 1 Samuel 9:6-8 - And he said to him, "Look now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honorable man; all that he says surely comes to pass. So let us go there; perhaps he can show us the way that we should go." …

  19. God chose the best man to be king He was humble and not seeking to be the king. (1 Sam 10:21-23)

  20. God chose the best man to be king 1 Samuel 10:21-23 - When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was chosen. And Saul the son of Kish was chosen. But when they sought him, he could not be found. 22 Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, "Has the man come here yet?" And the LORD answered, "There he is, hidden among the equipment."

  21. God chose the best man to be king 23 So they ran and brought him from there; and when he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward.

  22. God chose the best man to be king We will also see that he instilled a powerful faith in his son Jonathan!

  23. The Fall of Saul Israel needed a strong king. God would use tests to help build his faith. When you study Genesis you will see that God always does this! Saul would have the help of God, His servant Samuel and other spiritual men. Saul had to remain humble and stay focused only on God’s council.

  24. The Fall of Saul Remember the exhortation given to Joshua. (Joshua 1:7)

  25. The Fall of Saul Joshua 1:7- "Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.

  26. The Fall of Saul Saul was going to have to make a choice between being molded by the expectations of the people or the expectations of God. (Gal 1:10)

  27. The Fall of Saul Galatians 1:10 - For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.

  28. The Fall of Saul He would be like a new coach of a major football team. The worldly standards of other kings would be in the minds of the people. It is not easy to lead a carnal people. There will be conflicts! God gives Saul a major test at Gilgal. The Philistines appeared to have an unbeatable army. (1 Sam 13:5)

  29. The Fall of Saul 1 Samuel 13:5- Then the Philistines gathered together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of Beth Aven.

  30. The Fall of Saul Saul is put in a holding pattern that is causing the people to fear and abandon hope. (1 Sam 13:6-8)

  31. The Fall of Saul 1 Samuel 13:6-8- When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits. 7 And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

  32. The Fall of Saul 8 Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

  33. The Fall of Saul This is a classic test of faith. God’s instructions are clear, but human wisdom says that circumstances would change what Saul should do. Saul gave into the pressure and did what worldly people would have done! What did God think? (1 Sam 13:9-10)

  34. The Fall of Saul 1 Samuel 13:9-10- So Saul said, "Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to me." And he offered the burnt offering. 10 Now it happened, as soon as he had finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.

  35. The Fall of Saul Is Saul reasoning well? (1 Sam 13:11-12)

  36. The Fall of Saul 1 Samuel 13:11-12- And Samuel said, "What have you done?" And Saul said, "When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash, 12 "then I said, 'The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the LORD.' Therefore I felt compelled, and offered a burnt offering."

  37. The Fall of Saul He needed to remember what real obedience is about. (1 Sam 13:13-14)

  38. The Fall of Saul 1 Samuel 13:13-14- And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you. For now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.

  39. The Fall of Saul 14 "But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you."

  40. The Fall of Saul What would you have done? Do you agree with God in this matter?

  41. Saul develops a hardened heart Even though Saul disobeyed and was rebuked, His army won the battle and he was highly praised. When your peers are worldly people you will be encouraged in pride. What do your relationships say about you? Saul fails another test with the Amalekites. (1 Sam 15:3, 9)

  42. Saul develops a hardened heart 1 Samuel 15:3 - 'Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.' "

  43. Saul develops a hardened heart 1 Samuel 15:9- But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed.

  44. Saul develops a hardened heart Saul now is set on pleasing men. Worldly men would say that Saul was obedient to God. What percentage of God’s will did he obey? His mind is so distorted that he even tries to convince Samuel that he obeyed. He needed to shut his mouth and hear God. (1 Sam 15:13-16)

  45. Saul develops a hardened heart 1 Samuel 15:13-16- Then Samuel went to Saul, and Saul said to him, "Blessed are you of the LORD! I have performed the commandment of the LORD." 14 But Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?“

  46. Saul develops a hardened heart 15 And Saul said, "They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and the oxen, to sacrifice to the LORD your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed." 16 Then Samuel said to Saul, "Be quiet! And I will tell you what the LORD said to me last night." And he said to him, "Speak on."

  47. Saul develops a hardened heart He lost a love for God and the ability to think. (1 Sam 15:10-11)

  48. Saul develops a hardened heart 1 Samuel 15:10-11 - Now the word of the LORD came to Samuel, saying, 11 "I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned back from following Me, and has not performed My commandments." And it grieved Samuel, and he cried out to the LORD all night.

  49. Saul develops a hardened heart Saul never again finds true repentance. (1 Sam 15:22-23)

  50. Saul develops a hardened heart 1 Samuel 15:22-23- Then Samuel said: "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king."
