  3. 2.0 BACKGROUND • 1981-Preferential Trade Area (PTA) was formed with the aim of attaining sustainable growth and development • 1994-PTA was transformed into a Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa. • 2000-COMESA Free Trade Area(FTA) was launched with the aim of eliminating all tariffs and the non-tariff barriers among the participating states.

  4. 2.0 BACKGROUND Cont • 2008-Customs Union to be launched Studies have shown that international transport account for 20.7% of the cost in Sub-Sahara • while for the rest of the world it is only 5.1% • For other African countries it is 12.7% • The challenge is that most COMESA Member States are sub-Sahara
