  1. Students as Teaching and Learning Consultants By Kathrine Jensen Funded by the Higher Education Academy: Aug 2012-Aug 2013 Presentation made available under a Creative Commons License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/

  2. Project aims: • to promote authentic student engagement in the enhancement of teaching and learning and explore the nature and construct of inspirational teaching. • to create opportunities for student and staff to engage in reflection and dialogue around teaching and learning approaches • offer academic staff a qualified student’s eye perspective (at points of need) that goes beyond the typical end of module evaluation response or NSS survey.

  3. Potential consultant tasks • Classroom observation • Mini student focus group • Critical reader • Evaluate VLE resources/lay out

  4. Project • Collaboration with Students’ Union • Training students in Nov • Staff/student partnership approach • Lecturers elect to participate (contact the project coordinator). • The project coordinator assigns a student consultant to work with the lecturer based upon the student consultants availability and wishes and the details of the lecturer’s request, all the time ensuring that the student has no previous or planned future connections with that lecturer

  5. The process • The lecturer and the allocated student consultant meet to discuss the task, clarify expectations and boundaries, and to confirm practical arrangements (i.e. if a teaching session is to be observed the where, when and how of this). • The student consultants undertakes the task/activity, gathers the appropriate information as agreed and negotiated with the lecturer at the initial meeting. • The student consultant prepares feedback for the lecturer, in written and/or verbal form as agreed. The student consultant also keeps the project coordinator informed about progress with the assignment. • The student consultant, as arranged previously, meets again with the lecturer to provide feedback.

  6. What are they not? • Not subject experts • Not linked to appraisal process
