BOSTIN BAY BEACHWATER ACTIVITES • Watch the young and adventurous surf the waves as you chow down on jerk pork, the Jamaican dish this beach is famous for. • This beach isn't known for its sand (though it is powder-white) or its water (clear with pretty good waves for beginning surfers) but rather for its food. Boston Bay claims to be the birthplace of jerk seasoning, so come hungry and ready to taste-test.

If you love listening to live music and discovering new bands,  you won't want to miss Alfred's Ocean Place, which features nightly performances right on the beach. • The music of Jamaica includes Jamaican folk music and many popular genres, such as mento, ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub music,dancehall, ska jazz, reggae fusion and related styles. Jamaica's music culture is a fusion of elements from the United States (rhythm and blues and soul), Africa, and neighboring Caribbean islands such as Trinidad and Tobago (calypso and soca). Reggae is especially popular through the international fame of Bob Marley. Jamaican music's influence on music styles in other countries includes the practice of toasting, which was brought to New York City and evolved into rapping. British genres as Lovers rock and jungle music are also influenced by Jamaican music.

  9. Cricket SPORTS • A remnant from British rule, cricket used to be the most dominant sports in Jamaica and in the rest of the Caribbean. The West Indies cricket team used to be the most dominant cricket team in the world. For the time being, we have declined as a dominant world cricket team. Jamaican cricket has produced many of the West Indies' and the world best. These include George Headley, Michael Holding, Courtney Walsh, Jeffrey Dujon, Alfred Valentine, Jackie Hendricks, Collie Smith, Lawrence Rowe, Allan Rae, Maurice Foster, Jimmy Adams, and Robert Samuels. George Headley who played in the 1930's is probably Jamaica's most famous cricket star. • Jamaica is the home to one of the biggest and most famous cricket stadiums in the Caribbean, The 12000 seat Sabina Park in Kingston. Cricket matches are still played all over the island and cricket remains a favourite spectator sport in Jamaica.

FOLLY OVAL • Allan Ave  Port Antonio, Jamaica A myth exists that the great Folly Mansion was constructed by a rich American man to impress his sweetheart and convince her to move to Jamaica with him. However, corners were cut in the construction and cement was mixed with saltwater rather than fresh water. When his wife came to inspect the property it had already begun to crumble and she exclaimed "What a Folly" and flew back to America, never to return. The Folly Mansion was then left to crumble in to the ground.

  19. CULTURAL HISTORY BIOGRAPHY Jamaicawas inhabited by Arawak Indians when Columbus explored it in 1494 and named it St. Iago. It remained under Spanish rule until 1655, when it became a British possession. Buccaneers operated from Port Royal, also the capital, until it fell into the sea in an earthquake in 1692. Disease decimated the Arawaks, so black slaves were imported to work on the sugar plantations. During the 17th and 18th centuries the British were consistently harassed by the Maroons, armed bands of freed slaves roaming the countryside. Abolition of the slave trade (1807), emancipation of the slaves (1833), and a drop in sugar prices eventually led to a depression that resulted in an uprising in 1865. The following year Jamaica became a Crown colony, and conditions improved considerably. Introduction of bananas reduced dependence on sugar. On May 5, 1953, Jamaica gained internal autonomy, and, in 1958, superheaded the organization of the West Indies Federation. A nationalist labor leader, Sir Alexander Bustamente, later campaigned to withdraw from the federation. After a referendum, Jamaica became independent on Aug. 6, 1962. Michael Manley, of the socialist People's National Party, became prime minister in 1972.
