The Issue • A new designer drug, MDVP, is being sold legally under the name of “bath salts” • Easily obtainable- People are simply walking into local gas stations and tobacco stores and purchasing it • This drug is incredibly dangerous and is responsible for many fatal overdoses • Common names: Ivory Wave, Blue Silk, and LoveyDovey

MDVP (methylenedioxypyrovalerone) • In 2010 it began being sold legally in the United States • Appears as a white or light-brown clump powder • Its effects are similar to methamphetamine and ecstasy • Because the drug is new, researchers are still unsure of all of its effects • 10 States have already taken action to outlaw MDVP, Illinois needs to follow suit

  4. How it has affected the community • On April 27, 2011 a 28 year-old woman, Tonia Whitehead, fatally overdosed in Alton, IL • “These designer drugs are causing deaths. Unfortunately, the young lady in Alton had to lose her life… this shows the need to quickly get the bill to Gov. Pat Quinn’s desk” remarked Sponsoring Senator Jacqueline Collins. • On May 12, 2011,Indiana State Police said a 42-year-old woman they believe was high on bath salts trashed a hotel room. Police said when they arrived Wednesday at a hotel near Rensselaer, Tammy Winter, of Demotte, was sitting on a bed, rambling about evil spirits and needing to write on the walls of the room to protect her from the spirits. A relative who was present told police that Winter was an abuser of bath salts. • Poison Control centers have received 298 calls last year and over 1,800 this year retaining to bath salts (over 100 in Illinois alone) • Callers reported having sever hallucinations, paranoia and psychotic episodes

  5. A Call to Action • Currently, bill HB1655 is sitting on the desks of Illinois legislatures, waiting to be passed • This bill needs immediate attention, and an increased awareness among the public • Solution: Pass bill HB1655.
