  1. Please turn in the New Testament to Colossians 1

  2. The Supremacy of Christ in a Dad’s Life Colossians 1:15-18

  3. The Hymn to Christ • Many Pauline and New Testament scholars believe that Colossians 1:15-20 was a hymn sung by the 1st Century Church. • With two or three stanzas • Perhaps Paul was praying and then broke into praise and worship with this hymn.

  4. Colossians 1:15-16 • Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

  5. Colossians 1:17-18 • And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

  6. Jesus is God! • Colossians 1:15 • Who [Jesus] is the image (eikōn) of the invisible God, • An Image • A visible representation of something • An icon

  7. Jesus is God! • 2 Corinthians 4:4 • In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

  8. John 1:18 • No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. • Hebrews 1:3 • Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

  9. Three Doctrinal Points • The truth that Paul is presenting here is what divides Christianity from cults and false religions. • This is the central truth of the New Testament. • Jesus is the Son of God and provides the ultimate, perfect, and final revelation of who God is as God the Son.

  10. Commentary [Jesus] was the unique manifestation of both God and man, always embodying the best of both wherever he was. In choosing the word “image,” Paul stressed that God was present wherever Jesus was. He was the personal manifestation of deity. The New American Commentary p. 215

  11. Firstborn • Colossians 1:15 • Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

  12. Heresy • This word is not used in the sense of indicating that Jesus is a “created being.” • Arius (Alexandria, Egypt) • Arianism is a heretical doctrine which teaches that Jesus is the first and ultimate in created beings.

  13. God Speaking about David • Psalm 89:27 • Also I will make him [David] my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth. The term “firstborn” describes how God sees David among all the kings of the earth and specifically within Israel’s history.

  14. “firstborn” The context demands an understanding of preeminence.

  15. Jesus—Creator God • Colossians 1:16 • For by him [Jesus] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

  16. Turn to Proverbs 8 1 Corinthians 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom,

  17. Colossians 1:17 • And he [Jesus] is before all things, and by him [Jesus] all things consist. • And he [Jesus] is before all things, and in him [Jesus] all things hold together. NOT only is Jesus the creator, He is the very One who holds it all together.

  18. Paul is affirming the eternality, deity, and Supremacy of Jesus in the strongest possible terms.

  19. Colossians 1:18 • And he [Jesus] is the head of the body, the church: • who [Jesus] is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead;

  20. The Head • Jesus is Lord of all creation—the entire Universe. • He is also Lord of the re-creation. • Lord of the Church • Consists of all those who have been born-again.

  21. Lord of the Church • The Pastor is NOT Lord • Tradition is NOT Lord of the Church • The Head Deacon or Matriarch is NOT Lord • Man-made Convictions are NOT Lord • The Bishop or Denominational HQ is NOT Lord • The Pope is NOT Lord of the Church

  22. This is how we show He is Lord: 1. God-Glorifying • He is God 2. Christ-Exalting • He is the Head of the Church 3. Gospel-Centered • He is the Gospel 4. Biblically-Based • This is His Revelation

  23. Colossians 1:18 • that in all things he might have the preeminence. • Preeminent: • Paramount rank, dignity, and importance • Supremacy

  24. “In All Things” • In the Universe • In a Nation • In the Church • In the Family • In My Life What is Idolatry? It is the SIN of NOT keeping Christ preeminent in all things!

  25. Question Doesn’t God the Father get jealous over the preeminence of the Son?

  26. No • Actually, it is JUST the opposite. • The Father is angry with anything or anyone that interferes or detracts from His Son Jesus Christ having the preeminence.

  27. Turn to Philippians 2:9-11

  28. Application What’s happens when dads strive to keep Christ preeminent in their lives?

  29. A Nation or Tribe or Community Sons/ Daughters Wife/ Mom Dad Christ Preeminent Local Church Work

  30. The Struggle • What could have the preeminence? • Self • Work • Wife or Children (they call the shots) • Sports, the Hobby • Apathy

  31. What are the outward signs that Christ has preeminence in a dad’s life?
