  2. What is a Liberal Arts Education? Core Classes • LA 100 • New Student Leadership • Speech/Civilization/History/Reasoning Courses • LA 200 • Philosophy/History • LA 300 • Mass Media & Cultural Studies Exploratory Classes • Fine Arts – Music/Art/Theater • Foreign Language/Culture • Spanish/French • Intl. Culture Math, Sciences, Sociology, International Studies/Study Abroad, etc…..

Brain Structure for Learning Right Brain • Creative • Abstract Thought • Emotional • Illogical (at times) • Intuitive • “Out of the Box” Left Brain • Analytical • Concrete Sequential • Rational • Logical • Perceptive • Less Creative, More Idealistic How does the MBTI fit into the Right/Left Brain Paradigm? How does it fit in with you?

Major does NOT equal Career! • Major equals “expertise” of your knowledge • Minor(s) equal “very proficient” in area • Core classes build a strong, well-rounded foundation in which to compete in today’s workforce. • Exploratory courses aid in identifying areas of extreme interest vs. areas of moderate interest/enjoyment…keep an open mind!

EXPLORATORY COURSES Freshmen/Sophomore (or later) • Fine Arts Courses • Intercultural Courses • International Courses • Laboratory Sciences Courses • Philosophy and Religion Courses • Social Sciences Courses Exploratory Courses are those outside of your major and not LA courses! These courses may be taken any year , Freshman through Senior, as often as you would like to take them!

Business Major - International Business Track Note: Business majors must complete ECO 115, and either ECO 221 or ECO 223, BUS 265, and ACC 221 and ACC 222 with a ‘C-‘ or better before enrolling in the 300 or 400-level courses in the department. Core Requirements: BUS 100 Introduction to Business BUS 470 Senior Sem. in Business Policy BUS 265 Business Research Methods BUS 499 Senior Competency Practicum BUS 341 Business Law I CMP 130 Introduction to Computing BUS 351 Business Finance ECO 115 Principles of Economics BUS 361 Principles of Marketing MAT 135 Calculus BUS 367 Principles of Management Track Requirements: BUS/ECO 350 International Economics & Finance Plus TWO of the following: CAN/POL 250 Comp. Pol. in Dev. Count. HIS 361 East Asian History HIS 314 Indig. Cultures of Latin America POL 120 Intro to International Relations HIS 350 Europe Since 1945 POL 130 Intro to Comparative Politics NOTE: only one course from HIS and one course from POL may be included. Professional Development Requirements: BUS 498 Portfolio PDP 200 Preparing for Your Internship INT XXX Business Internship (Senior Year Experience) Related Field Requirements: ACC 221 Principles of Accounting I ECO 221 Interm. Microeconomic Theory ACC 222 Principles of Accounting II ECO 223 Interm. Macroeconomic Theory PLUS: Competence in a second language to be demonstrated by one of the following: a. Completion of FRE 211 or SPA 211. b. College course work in any foreign language through the intermediate level. c. A passing score on the CLEP in any foreign language (demonstrate proficiency only).

Honing in on an Interest • Can be a 1 to 2 year process • Can come out of your experiences in any type or level of course • Do not discount LA course topics as a “launching pad” for focusing in on an area of extreme interest. • Do not discount your exploratory courses; many students find their major in an area they had no idea they could achieve success in! i.e. Art, Music, Theater, Math, Languages, Humanities • KEEP AN OPEN MIND AT ALL TIMES!!!

  10. WORKSHEET TIME! This worksheet will help you identify your interests, both currently and what you think you MAY find interesting; some things that maybe you have ALWAYS wished you could do, but maybe didn’t think/feel that high school was the time or place to try them!

  11. The Role of your Professors and/or Advisors! • Give you knowledge to make informed decisions on your interest as well as knowledge to aid in your well-rounded education. • Give you guidance through the ins and outs of learning information in unfamiliar topics • Aid you every step of the way in acquiring competency in your primary areas of interest. • Helping you become the best person you can be in order to achieve the finest career possible in a workforce desperate for individuals who “KNOW HOW TO THINK!”
