  2. The rules of composition Composition: This is when you place objects for a piece of art. When putting together a still life composition, there are a number of design rules that can be followed to improve your composition: Rule 1: Open or closed composition Rule 2: Using shapes in a composition Rule 3: Creating the illusion of depth Rule 4: Showing reflected light in a composition

  6. Creating a Still Life composition using simple shapes in the style of Patrick Caulfield. • Patrick Caulfield was born in West London in 1936. He studied art at Harrow Art College and the Chelsea School of Art. • As a ‘modern artist’ he is often associated with the ‘pop art’ movement, although he preferred to be considered as a formal artist. • Caulfield’s style of still life painting was • very ‘stripped down’ and was often composed of: • Flat areas of simple colours • Thick black outlines • Some of his artworks are dominated by • a simple colour Pottery by Patrick Caulfield
