  2. Background Info • Mayan civilization was at its strongest from 200-900 AD • For 700 years the Maya lived in over 40 cities around the Yucatan Peninsula • Our job is to try to find out why many Mayan cities were empty after 900 AD

  3. Slash and Burn Agriculture • The Mayans were farmers who had to grow crops in the middle of the jungle. • To make space for crops, the Maya slashed and burned trees and plants. • Slash and Burn farming is how they adapted to their environment.

  4. One Theory on the Disappearance of the Maya • Slash and Burn farming helps explain the collapse of Mayan civilization • Slash and Burn farming works, but eventually it ruins the soil. • The Maya might have run out of good soil and had to move away to find better farming.
