Over a thousand years ago, three brothers - Lech, Czech, and Rus - embarked on a journey to find new lands. This story follows their adventures and how Lech became the first Duke of Poland, leading to the establishment of Gniezno, the capital city.

Over a thousandyears ago, therelived a king whoruledoverthelandsthatlay near the Vistula River. One daythethe king died and his wealth was left to his sons Lech, Czech and Rus. Theydecided to searchtheotherlands.
Lech was theoldest and becamethenew chief. Aftermonths of travelthethree brothers came upon a hillin a land of greenmeadows. Atthe top of thehillsstood a giantOaktree, and abovethetreeflew a great whiteeagle. „ Thateagleis a goodsignfromthegods!”
Lech told his brothers „I’mgoing to climbthistree and have a lookaround.” As Lech climbedupthetreehesawtheeagle’snest high inthebranches. Theeagleflew near him and would not lethimcomeclose to thenest. But hehadclimbed high enough to see for milesineverydirection.
To the North, Lech saw a largewaterarea. To the East, hesaw an endlessplain of flat and fertile land, and to theSouthwerehillswheresheep and cattlecouldgraze. To the West was a thick, darkforest.
Lech came down and told his brothers whathesaw. Czech wanted to go South and Rus wanted to go East. Finally, thethree brothers decided to separate. Thepeoplewhoagreedwith Czech went with Czech. But most of thepeopleremaitedwith Lech. „We will stayrighthere!” Lech toldthem.
Lech becamethe first Duke of Poland. Peoplebegan to build a townthere on thehill, and Lech chosethewhiteeaglewithitsspreadwings as theiremblem. Theycalledtheirtown Gniezno, whichmeans „Nest” intheSlaviclanguage. Thetownbecamethe capital of theirnation. Aftertheyearstheir country becameknown as Poland.
