  1. Puritans By: MadisynMargiotta

  2. Believe… • in predestination • that belief in Jesus and participation in the sacraments could not alone effect one's salvation • no one can choose salvation because that is the privilege of God alone. All features of salvation are determined by God's sovereignty

  3. The 3 Covenants • Covenant of Worksthat God promised Adam and his progeny eternal life if they obeyed moral law. After Adam broke this covenant • Covenant of Grace this covenant requires an active faith, and, as such, it softens the doctrine of predestination • Covenant of Redemption that Christ, who freely chose to sacrifice himself for fallen man, bound God to accept him as man's representative

  4. Clothing • The colors were black, brown, and the eternal indigo. • Clothing lines were harsh and severe and not at all form fitting. • They wore hats with what looked to be a buckle and the white bodice collars that both men and women wore. • Often very unflattering

  5. Daily Routine • Very focused on how to stay away from sin and please God • Men of the household did the hunting and the planting • Woman did the sewing, preserved vegetables, and cooked • The towns believed highly in a covenant therefore gave the power to the adult males who would elect officers to the general court • The Puritan church was at the middle of the community, also known as the meeting house • Church services every Sunday all day long and, by law, everyone had to attend. Some churches locked the doors so no one could leave • Games in this society were considered sin and hard work was emphasized • If the population was too large they would divide and make a new town

  6. Historical Events • The End of the Globe Theater – In 1642 the Puritans ofthe English Parliament issued an ordinance suppressing all stage plays in the theatres. • Puritans were known as those who wanted to completely change the Church of England, with its Roman Catholic type of structure and traditions, for another reformed and plain church model'.

  7. Diet • Depends on the exact area and season. Some were real bad off and it was rotten meat and moldy bread. Other places had a great deal of seafood, available hunting, and managed to get crops going. Everything was seasonal so food was "put up for winter" which means canned and jerky or salted meat. Everything got used. Pies were a common way to use up bits of leftover scraps. Spices were expensive but very necessary for preservation in times without refrigerators
