  2. What is Metalsmithing? • We define Metalsmithing as "creating jewelry through the manipulation of various metals." • In the next few weeks you will learn metalsmithing techniques while creating your own metal jewelry by forming and shaping it in various ways Basic Metalsmithing

  3. For Sawing: • Sawframe • Bench pin with V-slot, to clamp onto your table • Sawblades • Beeswax for lubricating saw blade Tools

  4. For Sanding and Filing • Sandpaper: black wet/dry sandpaper • Grits: 220, 320, 400, 600 • Files Tools

  5. Pliers, Hand tools: • Needle nose pliers (aka chain nose) • Round-round nose pliers • Flat nose pliers • Raw Hide Mallet • Ball pien hammer Tools

  6. Flex Shaft Machine • Mandrels, grinding and polishing wheels Tools

  7. Let us review some safety rules • While working with metals… Safety is IMPORTANT!

  8. You are RESPONSIBLE for your safety • Tie your hair back if it is long • NO loose clothing (sleeves that dangle) • NO hanging jewelry (long necklaces) • If an injury occurs… • First aid in the classroom for minor cuts • Escorted to nurse for emergency Safety in the Studio

  9. Mindfulness means being aware of all that is around you, or paying attention to detail at all times. It’s when we let our minds wander that safety considerations tend to drop by the wayside. The best way to work safely is to simply pay attention to what you are doing! Safety in the Studio

Protecting them should always be your top priority •Lungs - What we breathe can affect our health, both in the short term and the long run. •Skin- Your skin is actually the largest organ in your body, cover it with an apron and pay attention at all times.
