This document outlines the methodology for determining direct dose compliance with 40 CFR 190 at Millstone Nuclear Power Station's radwaste storage areas. The approach involves assuming one Curie of Cs-137 is evenly distributed in the source volume, utilizing shielding codes to calculate the dose to TLD and the site boundary. The ratio of boundary dose to TLD dose is determined, leading to the calculation of total direct doses for four radwaste areas, revealing a total dose of 0.21 mrem, significantly lower than previous estimates using older methods.

Direct Dose Determination Methodology for 40CFR190 Compliance Claude Flory Nuclear Technical Specialist III (actually a Health Physicist) Nuclear Analyses and Fuels Millstone Nuclear Power Station Waterford, Connecticut
Methodology • Assume one Curie of Cs-137 evenly distributed in source volume • Use shielding code to calculate dose to TLD and to site boundary • Determine ratio of doses (Boundary dose / TLD dose) • Dose at site boundary =(TLD reading – Avg Env TLDs) X ratio
2007 Results • See handout for details • Total direct dose for four radwaste areas = 0.18 mrem • Need to add effluent doses = 0.03 mrem • Total dose = 0.21 mrem • Old method would have given 4.03 mrem
