Multimedia - an art based discipline?LTSN-ICS Multimedia Workshop Multimedia > is “multiple media”  text & static image(s) … and a moving image with embedded soundtrack and music and sound effects and a narration/voice-over and 3D worlds [models and environments and movement and characterisation] and simple interaction [websites] and complex interactions [games]  and collaboration [games and beyond …]  and immersive virtual reality and … all of the above

Multimedia - an art based discipline?LTSN-ICS Multimedia Workshop Design context is … includes print; TV; movies; audio; products; packaging; interiors; advertising; games; web related design; experiences-theme parks- museums; digital imaging [powerpoint like showreels of photos] on CD-ROM = Pedro Mayer’s early work as genuine multimedia digital video artefacts [non-linear video and audio post prod] via digital lens’ and CD~DVD-ROM = Sony VAIO and Apple’s iTools websites including streamed video & Flash movies & VRML collaborative working product~industrial design + interface + body styling + user testing eg photocopier

Multimedia - an art based discipline?LTSN-ICS Multimedia Workshop Some factors ‘drawing with a computer’ direct with Adobe Photoshop [or its many copycats] or  with Adobe Photoshop via scanning and then tweening ordigital darkroom; filters/plug-insandsfx [design of new plug-ins itself …] or  direct with Adobe Illustrator [for smart data] and its many copycats MacromediaFlash or all of the above

Multimedia - an art based discipline?LTSN-ICS Multimedia Workshop Some features  in early 70’s as a fine artist saw robotics as performers … if only stadium rock concerts convergence - integration - accumulation - lower cost - size copy + type [libraries] + photos [libraries] + illustrations [clip art] + tables [import] + charts [import] + scanning [hi-res] + full colour print = “wizards + DTP” or  web-based ‘brochure-ware’ - with little interaction, no printing features product design >> user centred design >> information architects  on-screen type use~deployment use of animation in OS skins - Mac OS X dock

Multimedia - an art based discipline?LTSN-ICS Multimedia Workshop Conclusions  is Multimedia an art based discipline?  extremecollage~eclecticism engine  art & design are practice based [as is much of computing] but the confusion is in content vs capability = avaiators and posers vs animators = Mac OS X vs Windows XP icons need to explore and exploit new cultural territory = interface design  creative within programming  creative interactions and user focus …
