3. 1. MINISTRY SPONSORED • $1000 GRADUATION PROGRAM EXAMINATIONS SCHOLARSHIPS (awarded based upon academic excellence in Grade 12 provincial examinations) • Canadian citizen or landed immigrant • Achieve a minimum of ‘B’ in En 12/Com 12 • Write a minimum of 3 provincial exams and achieve a minimum of 86% on each • AP exam results CAN be used!! • Top 20 students in the province will receive $2500 Note: Class of 2006 – 88 @ $1000 each! School record 99 in 2001!

MINISTRY SPONSORED • $1000 DOGWOOD DISTRICT / AUTHORITY AWARDS ($500 cheque + $500 voucher - excellence in a ‘non-academic’ field) • Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. • Must demonstrate superior achievement in any of the following areas: • Fine Arts (Visual Arts, Dance, Drama, Music) • Applied Skills (Business Ed., Tech Ed., Home Ec) • Physical Activity (not limited to Phys. Ed) • Second Languages • Students CAN receive both this award as well as an ‘examination scholarship’ • Application via a District Committee will be necessary to receive these awards – TBA • The $500 voucher can only be redeemed at institutions approved by the ‘Industry Training Authority’ Note: These have been increased from 500 provincially to 3000 provincially.

MINISTRY SPONSORED • Passport to Education Program • Grade 10 – possible $250 • Grade 11 – possible $250 • Grade 12 – possible $500 • Must to Canadian citizen or landed immigrant • Based upon same criteria used to determine Grade 10 and 11 recipients * If you choose to complete your Portfolio, it may count as one of your top 5 courses.

POST SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS • Value and criteria vary • UBC – President’s Entrance • SFU – Summit & Shrum • You can use AP courses & AP exam results for admission average (‘5’ = 96%; ‘4’ = 86% - ONLY at UBC and SFU) • Most applications for admission are due in February but application can be made earlier (i.e. Early admission after first report card) • Based largely upon marks butMAJORawards require ‘other’ involvements • ENTRANCE BURSARIES • Must demonstrate the need for financial assistance above and beyond ‘the ordinary’

PRIVATE ORGANIZATIONS • Many stress COMMUNITY involvement (ie ‘Canada Trust’) or potential to become one of their employees in the future (ie ‘BC Hydro’) • Others stress an interest/aptitude in a specific area (ie ‘Louella Downing’ for visual & performing arts, ‘McDonald’s MVP Sports’ for athletics, ‘BC Health Care’ for health services) • As these applications become available, they will be advertised in the FINANCIAL AID BULLETINS

SCHOOL SPONSORED • Awards that have been bequeathed to the school for a variety of reasons • Many are specific to departments • Several are as a result of donations by school staff and recipients are selected as a result of their school involvement • Parent Advisory – “We Believe in You” Award2 @ $1000 each - need only C+ avg. to apply. They are looking for students who may not receive other award offers but who display a determination and passion to continue their education in pursuit of their career goal.

10. GENERAL TIMELINES • MOST SCHOLARSHIPS ARE POSTED AFTER CHRISTMAS BREAK • THE BULK WILL BE DUE FROM FEB. TO APRIL • Important that you are on top of your resume • Important that you have letters of reference to support your application(s) - CRUCIAL TO VERIFY SERVICE ACTIVITIES • Important that you PAY ATTENTION to deadlines.

11. WHAT YOU SHOULD BE DOING October to December • MAKE SURE YOU CAN GRADUATE • CHECK WITH PARENT’S WORKPLACE FOR SCHOLARSHIPS / BURSARIES • COMPLETE STUDENT PROFILE (in English class) • PREPARE YOUR RESUME • READ FINANCIAL AID BULLETINS • SURF THE NET (some sites listed on handout given today) • American Universities – SAT’s must be done - try to bring in ALL your applications at one time • Consider which teachers to ask for a teacher report and / or a reference letter

12. Teacher Reports • You will require at least 3 of these on file in Student Services when applying for internal scholarships (can have more) • They can be picked up in Student Services • Do not have to be from your current teachers (can be your coach as well) • These are confidential and you will not get to see them - they are used by the Scholarship committee ONLY - NOT sent out of the school

13. Reference Letters • Consider carefully which teachers (and community personnel) from whom you may need a reference letter • The person you ask should know you quite well so that they can write a meaningful reference letter . . . their ‘status’ is not as important as their ability to convey your strengths from knowing you (there is a request form you may use in Student Services) • You MUST supply them with a copy of your resume • You MUST give them at least 2 weeks to write the letter • If you would like their letter for multiple applications, request that they print several copies for you at the same time • They may request that the letter remains confidential in which case it will be placed in your file but multiple copies will not be made (particularly true for American applications) • Please DO NOT request a letter unless you intend to use it • If you require a ‘Principal’s report’ or you would like a reference letter from Mr. Mickie, you must submit info to ME and your folder will be forwarded to Mr. Mickie - try to allow at least ONE MONTH

14. January and February • Watch for announcements for SFU and UBC - be sure to respond ON TIME. • Be aware that you must apply NOW for some scholarships even though it seems early • Update your STUDENT PROFILE . . . If needed

15. March and April • Check the Financial Aid section in post-secondary institution calendars or online • This is a CRUCIAL time period as many applications are posted and due in this period • Ask for reference letters as needed but make sure youallow a MINIMUM of 2 weeks

16. May and June • Due dates for many local scholarships fall in this time period • Your Student Profile MUST be on file to be considered for any of these awards • If you do ‘WIN’ a scholarship . . . BE SURE TO SEND A THANK YOU!!! • You will be asked to inform me of any scholarships that you have been offered so that your accomplishments can be announced at the grad ceremony Class of 2006 - $955,307 School record – 2005 – $989,375

17. HOW DO I APPLY? • External Applications • Follow instructions for application • You are responsible for mailing, etc. • Internal Applications • Will appear in the Financial Aid Bulletins • Generally require 3 teacher reports and your Student Profile • Follow instructions - some YOU will be responsible for mailing while others are to be submitted to Student Services

18. TRANSCRIPTS You can request a transcript from Mrs. Bogen in Student Services - this is a grade 11 /12 ‘working’ transcript Note that ALL your marks will appear on this transcript – Summer School as well as rewritten provincial exams

19. This will also include ALL of your marks TRANSCRIPTS This is a HISTORICAL TRANSCRIPT It includes all of your marks from when you entered Burnaby North

20. Provincial Examinable courses are on ‘top’ TRANSCRIPTS This is what your OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT will look like. You will receive it from the Ministry upon graduation ‘Other’ courses are on the ‘bottom’

21. Financial Aid Bulletins There will be about 30 of these throughout the year and they will be posted in all English 12 & Communication 12 classrooms as well as outside Student Services, in the Library and on the school website so . . . please . . .

23. STUDENT SERVICES When you read about an award or scholarship in the Financial Aid Bulletin that you would like to apply for – go to Student Services

24. THE APPLICATIONS ARE FILED BY DUE DATE IN THE SCHOLARSHIP BOX IN STUDENT SERVICES

25. ALONG WITH AN APPLICATION, YOU CAN ALSO PICK UP YELLOWTEACHER REPORTS (you need 3 on file for many applications) AND A STUDENT PROFILE SHEET(these will be distributed in your English class later this month) AND A REFERENCE LETTER REQUEST FORM

UBC - Admission Cut-offs 2006 • Arts 84% • Computer Science 84% • Commerce 84% • Engineering 79% • Forestry 75% • Human Kinetics 87% • Music 67% • Dental Hygiene 91% • Science 90% • Food, Nutrition & Health 83% • President’s Entrance Scholarships (PES) • 95.00%+ : $4000 & early registration plus housing priority • 90.00% to 94.99%: $2000 & early reg. & housing priority • 86.00% to 89.99%: $500 book award & early registration • AP Achievement Scholarship - $500 (3 AP exams / 3+)

27. SFU - Admission Cut-offs You are guaranteed the following: • With an admission average of 80% or more: • admission to a wide range of programs • early course enrollment access • you are allowed to enroll in courses ahead of current students. • residence accommodation • guaranteed a room in residence to all new full-time students who meet all applicable deadlines. • With an admission average between 85% and 89%: • admission to any program • plus all of the above re: registration, residence, etc. • With 90% or more: • All of the above PLUS • early course enrollment priority access • a minimum $3,500 scholarship • Each year, they offer over 1,500 entrance scholarships ranging in value from $3,500 to $34,000. • Less than 80%:Encouraged to apply! Enrollment levels in some programs, combined with additional government funding, may allow for more spaces. You also may qualify under their Diverse Qualifications program.

28. AP CREDIT - ADMISSION • The admission average for students who present results from one or more AP courses will be calculated on the higher of either the AP score or the BC Grade 12 course grade of an equivalent approved provincially examinable course. AP courses not provincially examinable are considered electives, and depending on the admission requirements for the program of your choice, may be used in the calculation of the admission average as meeting general University entrance requirements. In those cases where the AP grade is not available at the time of admission selection, the equivalent BC Grade 12 course grade will be used. • The grade conversion scale that is used to determine admission based on official AP results at UBC and SFU ONLY is as follows: Note: YOUR TRANSCRIPT DOES NOT CHANGE TO INDICATE THIS!
